New IMF Chief Graduated Holton Arms
"I can't imagine that parents would decide to send their daughter to private high school and then suddenly worry about the "looming" costs of college."

You breathe rarefied air. And, um, is no one in your circle having to face some of the harsh realities of this economy?
Not the PP but I think the harsh realities of this economy were more than evident before any child entering 11th grade this year entered 9th grade. Before we enrolled our DD at a private high school we made sure that we could swing it through 12th grade because we knew how disruptive it would be to remove her midway through.

It's not rarefied air I'm breathing --- it's realistic, conscientious and responsible air.

Am I correct in guessing that the 11th grade class is not losing a significant number of girls? No one has piped in to say this rumor is true; or is it just summer and people are on vacation?

My DD already graduated Holton. But it is pretty normal that a few rising juniors leave to go to boarding school each year.

As a graduate and 10-year girl myself, I found the ad to be a bit pretentious and definitely self-promoting, but Lagarde openly and explicitly refers to herself as an alumna of my (or should I say "our"?) alma mater. Yes, it's self-puffery, but it appears that there are a lot of sour grapes out there regarding the matter. She considers herself to be a graduate, so why shouldn't Holton capitalize off of the free publicity? All schools, regardless of funding status, do it with notable alumnae such as athletes, authors, doctors, etc. The main point, as the numerous male commenters accusing women of attacking one another have indicated, is that the ad does not harm anyone, even if it's deemed to be misleading. If Holton receives a record number of applications for the 2011 school year, how does that personally injure any of you? Each person is entitled to his or her opinion, but disproportionately aggressive reactions are thinly veiled attacks based on resentment and bitterness.

Check out more HAS-Lagarde press if you can stop seething long enough to read it:

My daughter entered 3rd grade at Holton-Arms last year. Many or few applications, we felt lucky to get in. And the school has been simply GREAT for her. Anyone who thinks that is false advertising, simply stay away, I don't mind. She's my only daughter and she's already in. You think there is funky advertising, just don't apply. I don't care - my child won't suffer ... and may be advantaged by not going to school with your kids.

I am a current Holton parent, I do not think the advertising was funky at all. As an all girls school I see nothing wrong with the school celebrating such an amazing accomplishment by a woman especially since she is one of their own. I think the problem is that it is Holton. If NCS or Sidwell had done this I really do not think their would be as much of an issue. People want to think the only good schools are located in DC and any schools that are not in DC proper are 2nd tier. That is not true. With so many people questioning the education at all privates I think any accomplishment by a private school should be celebrated by all independent schools. In my opinion, it shines a light on all of them.

No way. If NCS or Sidwell had done this, people on DCUM would be going absolutely ape-sh*t!

investigation Thursday into allegations that Lagarde abused her power in a 2007 dispute involving a multimillion-dollar payout to a French tycoon.

Still an amazing accomplishment?

CHRISTINE Lagarde, the French politician entrusted with restoring the reputation of the International Monetary Fund after the resignation of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, is to face a criminal inquiry over corruption claims.

The decision by a French court to investigate Ms Lagarde, 55, for allegedly aiding and abetting embezzlement and fraud -- offences that carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison -- represents a fresh embarrassment to the IMF just a month after it appointed her managing director.

This is from your article too!

Ms. Lagarde is not accused of corruption,” Yury Rubinskiy, an observer of the Voice of Russia, says. “She is not accused of giving or taking a bribe or of money laundering. She is accused only of excess of power, which had some consequences for the French state.”

“In fact,” he continues, “this initiative to start a trial against Ms. Lagarde is aimed not as much against her than against President Sarkozy, who is accused of violating the principle of separation of powers. Most probably, this will be a long trial. Christine Lagarde is an experienced lawyer herself, besides being a politician and an economist. I believe that in this story with Mr. Tapie, Ms. Lagarde fully realized what she was doing, and was sure that she was not doing anything unlawful.

Yes, I still think her appointment is an amazing accomplishment.

PP, there is more to the story
It is an accomplishment to get to the top of IMF, but to stay there seems to be a greater one. DSK is out, Christine will be out too. How embaressing to get nailed so soon

naive, are you not? She of all people not knowing she was doing anything unlawful
Anonymous
Not naive at all. Perhaps you are for knowing how smart she is and thinking she would put herself in something that would get her nailed. Not to mention it does not surprise me that they are digging for something to smear her. I do not believe this will go far.
