Lottery results are up

Does anyone have any guesses for the odds of getting into Chisholm for pk3 with a #4 waitlist spot? No preferences, unfortunately.

“To Re-Enroll students and other forms” = RE-ENROLLING students are categorized as:
• Any Current DCPS Student:
• Students who are currently enrolled in any DCPS school, including students being assessed by Early Stages, during the current school year.
• Students who are transferring from any DCPS elementary to middle or middle to high school.
• Students transferring from one DCPS school to another DCPS school.

So I think that's us (transferring from one DCPS school to another DCPS school) but when I go to the form, there's no way to indicate a school. I don't want to accidentally re-enroll in my current school. Am I doing this right? Will there be like a drop down at the end where I choose the actual school.

I live in fear of accidentally turning down my spot at the new school!

There will be a drop-down menu and you absolutely should make sure you choose the right school!

But if you have questions, call the admin at the new school right now.

Must have been a really competitive year. Congrats to everyone who got what they hoped for! For those who didn't, hope your kids don't take it personally. The system is complete and total crapshoot even for the competitive schools.

Interesting. I have to say, I didn't think Banneker was all that tough of an admit. I honestly thought they accepted nearly all their applicants and weren't like Walls.

DCUM certainly pushes that narrative.

I think it's harder than it used to be. My DD 7th is pining to go.

I actually think it's just that people used to say whatever they wanted about Banneker with zero first-hand information and it was mostly informed by racism. Now that the "DCUM" kind of people are priced out of privates and running out of spots at J-R and SWW, all of a sudden they're "taking a chance" on the school they considered themselves benevolent pioneers for even considering, only to find out . . . it's not a cakewalk just because it's full of black kids.

DCUM kind of people would never be priced out of privates. The problem is people who don't belong on DCUM are now on here.

omg what.

"people who don't belong" -- care to spell this out for us? race, class? Say what you mean (and take the consequences).

The people who are now priced out of privates.

Financial aid is so generous at DMV private schools I wonder who is actually priced out.

Is this true? I’ve always thought our family’s income was too high to qualify but way too low for it to be a wise financial move.

You should really check. I know of families with HHI of $350-400k on financial aid. It really depends on your specific circumstances.

This was us. You usually need to have a great athlete for this.

We are a current pk3 family at YY and have been very happy. In general, we have found the community to be welcoming and parents are quite involved. My child’s class has at least three kids who have exposure to Chinese at home through either parents or grandparents (or both). Depending on where you live, you may be able to sign up for a private bus. There are buses from cap hill and the takoma area.

I think the issue is that the privates simply have capped their growth. They don't want to get bigger; they can simply raise the price rather than add seats. I get it - they want a small, tight knit community feel. And the privates have more than enough people willing to pay, they turn away dozens of families each year who have the means.

Low number at DC Bilingual PK4. Not sure what to do now as we were thinking of moving to the suburbs for schools before we hit a point of no return with 5th grade lottery results (IB MS is McFarland), and it’s not like DCI is a guarantee

You've got some chance at Stoddert, MAYBE Yu Ying or Mann if you get super lucky. But you should almost certainly get a spot at HA before school starts. Good luck!

H-A took 9 kids for 1st grade with no preference in 25-26 cycle. Good chance OP sneaks in, maybe 60% odds (at least 1-2 kids in spots 1-10 will go elsewhere).

I don’t think they will get into HA. Person with prek3 have a different option. Look at the data. They only have 14 seats and all of them are in bounds with sibling attending. You won’t get your kid into ha until kindergarten.

Looks like last year they made 6 PK4 offers by August and 12 by October, so you may have a good chance. When were you planning to move to the suburbs?

Are you planning to do DCI for high school? My kid is in the Chinese program--I know it's hard to think about high school when your kid is in preK, but if you are interested in DCI, that might be a good reason to choose YY. Not many kids get off the waitlist in 6th grade anymore.

Anonymous wrote:Well, I was hoping for slightly better numbers, but as expected I'll be watching waitlists all summer and fall, looks like. But we matched with John Lewis which we're excited about!

For K:
1 Ross Elementary School Waitlisted - #24
2 Garrison Elementary School Waitlisted - #10
3 Inspired Teaching Demonstration PCS Waitlisted - #17
4 E.L. Haynes PCS - Elementary School Waitlisted - #6
5 John Lewis Elementary School Match (enrollment pending)
6 Lee Montessori PCS - Brookland Sibling Offered Waitlisted - #1

For 1st Grade:
1 Ross Elementary School Waitlisted - #45
2 Garrison Elementary School Waitlisted - #20
3 Inspired Teaching Demonstration PCS Waitlisted - #35
4 E.L. Haynes PCS - Elementary School Waitlisted - #8
5 John Lewis Elementary School Sibling Offered Waitlisted - #1
6 Lee Montessori PCS - Brookland Match (enrollment pending)

We put Lee down without much thought and will be turning down that offer - but is it just me or is it crazy that we got an offer for 1st from them with what must be a pretty crappy lottery number? They must be really falling in popularity.

Ha! I was wondering about you! I think these numbers are actually pretty good. But honestly, Lewis is great (or so I hear).

+1 I was also invested in the outcome for this family. I've heard great things about Lewis (have good friends with two kids there who wound up turning down a spot at a JKLM last year to stay) and think the PP will discover that the joy of being at a neighborhood school with a lot of community buy in will trump whatever perceived advantages they currently see at some of these further flung options.

+1. Having a good neighborhood school makes life so much easier and better during the elementary years. I would much rather do this than commute to a far school.

You may feel different as you get to upper elementary. Our kid is at a popular title 1 school with a nice community but many kids are struggling with grade level work and she is bored.

I don’t think they will this year and I doubt the poster with the sibling in prek3 will get in. Don’t count on it.

Any sense of whether EL Haynes expects to add new pre-k classes or anything else that would suggest they’ll move through their waitlist?
