By hang out, that means doing specific indoor activities with coaching and direct supervision, along with grabbing food from the restaurant. Yes, this isn’t the YMCA and we pay for the amenities like athletic training.

Usually because there are safety issues for teachers and staff getting to school. If I were a teacher, I literally would not be able to come in. No plows on my road at all. Tried to get my car out and it got stuck. My neighborhood is accessible to metro only by car (or bike, which doesn’t work in the ice).

I guess you could ask school to open and have voluntary attendance for teachers and kids, and then it’s not actually an instructional day, just a babysitting day.

But that is OK. If you can't come in, can some of the kids and some of the teachers who live nearby still go to work? This is how I grew up.

My guess is none of the teachers at my kid's school would be able to afford to live within walking distance. Teaching isn't a well paid field.

Newsflash, most admin don't make more than $90k. Sure there are some key positions who do, but not most. So you are correct: not many of your schools's employees live near your school.

I walked past the kids' elementary school on my way home. Part of the sidewalk is a little icy but generally safe. Wisconsin is open. The Wisconsin sidewalk is generally safe, except that you have to walk slowly over the bumps of snow. Buses are running. Many kids are out. It is a beautiful day. At least for Northwest schools, Janney, Mans, Hearst, and Murch, I don't see how it is dangerous to go to school tomorrow.

I also don't get it, maybe I am naive, why can't each school make its own call? Is it because most teachers and stuff live in the burbs and rely on cars? Is it a liability issue?

My elementary-age kids go to one of those schools and have been walking there since yesterday to meet up with friends! Our car got plowed in, which was annoying, but it wasn't that hard to shovel it out. All to say, we probably could have had school today even and been fine ...
