The tone is set by the president. Other presidents like Obama may have been tough on migrants as well, but we didn't hear as much about it because it wasn't the centerpiece of his campaign as it is with Trump. As long as Trump feeds the immigrants-are-criminals and immigrants-are-taking-over-our -country narrative and stoking tensions with made-for-TV footage like Alligator Alcatraz, ICE Barbie photo-ops at CECOT, Stephen Miller and Tom Homan angrily yelling about "illegals," using the military in ICE enforcement, and awarding ICE and the BP a budget that rivals the military budget of entire countries, divisions between Americans will continue and the flames of discord will be fanned. The whole thing needs to be taken down a few notches. By all means, take the criminal migrants--but stop treating everyone else as criminals and looking for excuses to get rid of mostly people of color without due process and without care for their legal and human rights.

Let's look at his full statement back in 2015....
"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."
(You seemed to have omitted the bolded. Wonder why?)

And, it turns out he was right. There is story after story of people from Mexico - primarily men - who have murdered, raped, or victimized American citizens. Many of them children.

And, now, after 4 years of Auto-pen, we have people like this from all over the world. Literally - all over the world.

Trump is fixing what Biden broke. And, correcting years of what other presidents have ignored. You don't end up with 11 million + of illegal aliens in the country if you enforce immigration laws. And, that 11 million has likely doubled - or more - because of Biden's unwillingness or ineptitude at enforcing the laws we have on the books.

We NEED leaders who will enforce our laws. The people being detained are present illegally and:
- have final removal orders but have refused to leave
- have been deported at least once, and then re-entered
- have been convicted of or accused of crimes in their home countries
- have committed crimes in the US other than entering illegally - many of them, violent crimes
- have overstayed their VISAs and failed to register with the US
Others are collateral arrests when ICE is arresting a criminal alien.

In 2023, 8,842 homicides committed by white people.
In 2023, 29 homicides committed by illegal immigrants.

Well now, that is 29 people who should be alive today because the illegal immigrant should NOT have been here.

Surely the number is higher than 29! After all, Trump has told us that there are thousands of murderers and rapists in the US who are illegals. His stats are usually impeccable. I thought that the Third World emptied its prisons and sent all the murderers here.

“If you look at what he did to the border, it’s so bad. [Biden] let in 21 million people… totally unvetted, totally unchecked. 11,888 have murdered people. Half of them have murdered more than one person.”
(9/30/24)

“How about allowing people to come to an open border, 13,000 of which were murderers? Many of them murdered far more than one person, and they're now happily living in the United States. You know, now a murderer, I believe this, it's in their genes. And we got a lot of bad genes in our country right now.”
(10/7/24)

Texas is the only state that reports crimes by citizenship and immigration status. Since homicide is not a subjective crime, it is a good proxy for crime rates. Homicide rate by illegals is less than that of both legal immigrants and citizens. I imagine that if we could with certainty predict who will murder, we could just keep them out or, if citizens, lock them up in advance. I think that argument about people who would be alive if illegals were not here is ab abstraction pulled out of data with no meaning in the real world. The more a police state clamps down, for instance, the more unnecessary deaths will ultimately occur.

This is a cyclical worldview, IMHO. Yes, far too many citizens and legal residents commit crimes. But the constitution constricts the allowable government response to those crimes.

Undocumented non-citizens have a different set of rights and suggesting that this comparison is appropriate seems cynical.

Furthermore, I have seen it suggested that when comparing crime rates among legal residents and undocumented individuals by demographic group, the undocumented group has higher crime rates than their equivalent legal resident group. I have not chased that thread down, but certainly is thought provoking.

The only insanity is the MAGA insanity and the inhumanity you all seem ok with defending. I don't want to hear your rambling about criminals-it's far beyond criminals. Even Joe Rogan has taken a position on the inhumanity and cruelty we are seeing with Ice and DHS. This administration and it's MAGA supporters stand for noting more than hatred.

Stop with the tears for the downtrodden. No sane country in the history of the world has opened the door to so many people, lost track of most, & spent billions housing them in hotels. All because they supposedly are nice people who just can’t wait to pick our strawberries.

There were no immigration laws for most of human history— and I really doubt there were any when your ancestors moved here.

Immigration made this country great — both economically and culturally — and cutting it off is a recipe for economic disaster. Go look at Japan’s economy if you want a peek at our future.

We have immigration laws now. Yes, immigrants do make this country great - LEGAL immigrants.
Since this thread is about ICE arresting illegal immigrants, your post is irrelevant.

In case you have your head under a rock or somewhere else the sun doesn’t shine, they have been arresting plenty of people here legally.

And the bigger point is that in the early 1900s there was no such thing as “illegal immigration”— if you could get to the US healthy you were allowed in— and that’s the system under which this country became the greatest and richest country in the world!

It is really scary how ignorant so many people are about US History. No way you took AP US History. Only the right kind of immigrant was allowed in to the US in 1900. It absolutely wasnt a free for all, let every enter.

In 1882 the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed which banned Chinese immigration for ten years. This was extended by the Geary Act as well as banning Chinese from becoming citizens. The Supreme Court upheld the Geary Act in Fong Yue Ting v. United States in 1893, and in 1902 Chinese immigration was made permanently illegal. This didn’t change until the 40’s when a small number were allowed in.

European immigrants in 1900 were screened at Ellis Island. Many were NOT admitted and turned back. If you were too sick or disabled or deemed somehow a threat you were turned back.

You are correct about the Chinese exclusion act but the whole reason we had that racist crap was because the default rule was that anyone could come in.

And yes ellis island screened for health— that’s why I said “if you could get to the US healthy you were allowed in” but that didn’t really constrain immigration that much or stop the US from having higher levels of immigration than we currently have.

So you are the one who is wrong about US history.

You have no understanding of US history. Please read up about all of the immigration acts in the early 20th century. There were multiple categories of immigrants who were excluded, quotas from various countries that encouraged Northern European immigration, and eventually literacy tests.

It wasn’t until the 1960’s that immigration started to open up to all nationalities.

If it’s not the homicide offender rate by race per 100,000 people it’s useless information.

Have any Democrats in Congress spoken out against this violent extremism?
