The reason of TJ has 0 MIT EA admission this season is cheating is being reported to MIT for certain person/group. Historic event.

Yup. Varsity math team cheater. No one on VMT got accepted to MIT this year and historically at least a few do.

Wow - what happened? How did they cheat? What were consequences?

I’d also like to know more details.

I asked out of curiosity...DC told me this is widely talked that TJ hosted AMC every year however that student always took AMC test outside TJ.

Fittingly, this student is going to Harvard.

What's the catch here? Why take AMC outside and what does it suggest?

4 TJ kids were admitted to MIT in RD. 2 are attending. The other 2 have committed to Harvard.

I believe Harvard accepted 7 kids from TJ this year and ALL of them picked Harvard. Some of the Harvard admits/commits were rejected from MIT and Stanford. And the MIT commits didn’t get accepted to Stanford/Harvard.

4 got into Stanford. Only 1 attending. The others chose Harvard and Princeton. Stanford seems to be the “hardest” to get into from TJ.

Only the student knows exactly why. One obvious benefit is others outside TJ did not know who actually took the test. Since there are two AMC tests at different times and TJ only hosts one, I know other kids who took test twice, one in TJ, one in another school, with the purpose to boost the score. So it is not odd for someone to take test outside TJ, the strange part was this person decided not to take the test in TJ.

Thanks but ??? why take twice and how would taking outside TJ boost the score?

You take AMC 10A & 10B or AMC 12A and 12B

It is not taking twice. You take both A and B, because you can use whatever is your best score.

Both tests are offered at TJ and almost every student takes them at TJ because it is so convenient.

Only one test was hosted by TJ as I know. AMC 10b and AMC 12b last year. No AMC 10a and AMC 12a at TJ.

Unless you live in Loudoun maybe?

Well Harvard MIT and Stanford are probably all equivalent and yet Harvard gets 100% yield, MIT gets 50% yield (from aSTEM school!) and Stanford gets a 25% yield.

If it any wonder that Stanford is a hard admit?

It doesn't suggest anything. There are a variety of locations where you can register and take the AMC 8, 10, and 12. Obviously the 8 does not really pertain to TJ since it is a MS test. I include it because there are a large number of available testing sites with registered proctors for both tests. The challenge is that students are sent their individual results and there is no longer a list of students and their scores. You would have to trust the score that the student reported, and it is easy enough to doctor the "official certificates" that the proctors send out. this makes verifying scores challenging. The solution would be to require kids to take the test at one location where the test results would be returned to and then distributed.

There are two sessions for the AMC 10 and 12, the A and B. They are two different tests, that are supposed to test similar material and be close to each other in terms of difficulty. This allows students who have a conflict on one test date to have the opportunity to take the test on the other date. Many students will take that A and the B because it is very likely that they will end up with different scores. The test is offered on the same day, regardless of the location. AMC 8 has a week long testing window, which si different. It could be that some kids want to take it after they get home and have a snack instead of right after school, or whenever TJ offers it.

Your score is not going to change based on testing location but might because you are someone who needs a bit of a break between school and taking the test.

This changes year to year. The set is so small that you can't derive any meaningful insights. In my kid's year, every Stanford RD admit was also accepted at Harvard. No one went to Harvard. That said, from their data, Harvard's primary pipeline is East Coast and Stanford is the opposite.

A student can only register AMC test outside the "home" school if the home school does not provide the test. Since TJ only hosts one (10b/12b), it is possible to register in other school for (10a/12a). The two tests are usually 2 week apart.

For TJ hosted test, it is within the school hour. It is very inconvenient to take the test outside TJ since it require at least 2 hours absence during the school day. DC did not sign up for extra test because of the extra effort to leave earlier and drive to another school.
