DC feds are hosed. RIP the job market, real estate market, tax base, etc.

Maybe. However, RTO could boost the DC economy. When COVID hit and everyone started WFH, local restaurants, dry cleaners, coffee shops, hair salons, professional clothing stores, etc had to lay off a lot of workers or close entirely. RTO for federal workers, even a reduced number, could have a ripple effect by boosting these businesses. Similarly, companies contracting with the government may move their offices to DC in order to be closer to their customers, and the number of trade shows may increase as well.

I'm not spending on any of the above until further notice. Too risky.

Notice from whom? And any cutbacks will only be temporary. Once you're more comfortable with your current situation, you will spend on these things.

As for when, Trump and DOGE need to be done with their shock and awe before things gear up for the midterms, which means Christmas of this year, if not earlier (they won't want to be Grinch, so probably October). Identifying fraud and waste will continue because those are a cudgel the GOP can wield against vulnerable Democrats.

They have a 180-day plan. Washington Post got a copy of it.

The notice would be from me. Who else is going to give me a notice when we have a government that has eliminated communications from federal agencies??

Of course, we hope cutbacks are only temporary. Most of those things though? I won't go back and spend on them. I make my own coffee or don't drink it. I know how to cut my own hair. I rarely need a dry cleaner.

Great, so we know the current chaos will last 6 months. Will the government resemble what it was? No, it won't. But families will figure things out. This is not a general state of turmoil for the economy like the Great Depression, Great Recession, or even Covid-19. It is a rapid restructuring of the Federal government. Many wish Trump would have done what Clinton did in the 1990s and take 6 months to study the problem, then reduce the Federal workforce by 377k jobs. Trump made a determination that he didn't have 6 months to do what needed to be done. So he skipped the study and went straight to offering buyouts, etc...

When families are going hungry, govt can hand out glp 1 to all the adults.

I can’t believe the stupidity of small businesses and non fed people, they didn’t bother to think that if their clients lose jobs then they lose business, but here we are. I have a couple of relatives in Baltimore who voted for Trump and their business sales are in the dump. I have zero sympathy.

Btw, I am not a Fed but I have 2 brain cells to figure out that pretty much everything in DC is tied to the Federal government.

You seem to be suggesting that people in America should vote for what's best for the people in the DC metro area? Why would someone in Illinois vote so that DC area workers are employed by the government?

What a dumba$$, thinking that Feds only exist in DC.

only 15% of the fed jobs are in the DMV

Because, why again? Is that when Musk takes over officially, or is it Vance?

Because of politics. Republicans have a very narrow house majority. Moving slow like Clinton would give Democrats time to maneuver, potentially blocking any layoffs, or even a study of who to lay off. Just look at the slew of TRO requests - it would be worse. The smart move for Democrats would be to get in front of this train and co-opt it. But they have their own politics that forced them to come out against layoffs.

Put simply, he Trump had to do it quickly or it wouldn't happen at all.

With regard to schadenfreude, why bother? Do you enjoy saying "I told you so?"

If you're not affected, spend that emotional energy comforting someone who is. Offer them a job or financial assistance until they land one. Otherwise, you're no better than what you accuse MAGA of being.

“If you’re not affected.” Boy, you people really don’t get it, do you? That’s ok, you will eventually. And we’ll remember how blithe you were in the face of other’s misery when you’re laid low by your own with no one left who GAS.

OP here. I’m not telling anyone I told you so. But I do want to hear the stories because it keeps me going in these terrible times. have you never heard of gallows humor?

I’m incredibly active trying to stop this 💩show. I’m currently volunteering for three special elections, I mentor young people running for local office, I call my senators and representative every single day and I get my friends to do the same.

But at the end of the night I wanna sit back and have a little laugh over those who thought the leopards wouldn’t eat their face.

What was that saying? If you’re feelings?

So much concern over DOGE employees having access to PII.

But no concern when Trump's tax filings were leaked.

Sitting back and laughing at the theater of hypocrisy. So many on DCUM deserve exactly what is coming.

Are you literally dumb? Or only figuratively?

DP. If you wouldn't be just as outraged if the roles were reversed (which is what the PP was implying) then you're a partisan.

I'm glad the OP clarified what the goal of this thread is. It's motivation for OP to continue the fight. But as some else asked earlier, why fight everything DOFE is doing? Democrats could pull a Bill Clinton, but they need to stop tilting at windmills and focus like a laser on what matters. And before you ask me to tell you what that is, look in the mirror and ask yourself that question. I hope the OP does this as well, because that is where motivation comes from, not schadenfreude (which translates to taking joy in the misery of others).
