Why would they end up in an orphanage. The girls are American, so why would they not be sent back home. They have three older brothers who refused to go with the family to Russia. The underage girls, presumably, did not have a choice.

The mother can be locked up and her children institutionalized if she is deemed alcoholic. That is Russian law. Who is paying for the girls to return to the U.S.? The three brothers are from an earlier marriage. Putin is obsessed with gaining population so much that they have kidnapped thousands of Ukrainian children. These girls are prime meat for trafficking. A responsible mother would not risk this.

Their family is stranded in a country where they can’t speak the language, know no one, and currently have no income stream. Her husband belongs to Russia’s military now. And she and her husband literally signed up for this.

It looks like her mother is coming to visit soon, so maybe she'll swoop in and pay the 10K to get everyone on a plane back to the States. Since her husband has basically abandoned them, I'm not sure what other choice she has since she doesn't seem to have the survival skills to learn how to navigate the public bus system in Russia, to make friends who can help her figure out how to survive, or to listen to Russians who can tell her how to make her life work in Russia.

Unfortunately, the grandmother will be trapped in Russia with them if she tries to enter the country. She should not come to Russia. This has all the hallmarks of becoming a major diplomatic incident.
