1500 SAT
rank 1/600
13 APs, mostly 5s, 4.0 uw (no idea how you would weight that but all honors and AP)
great common app - the other essay was totally random
sports, clubs, leadership

wow---1/600! big congrats!!!

Thank you - he also got in with 4 years of foreign language, but 8-11 grade. Doubled up on science APs senior year. I never knew "4 years IN high school" was a thing until this board, at which time I was told I needed to spend more time on college confidential or I would have known. Lesson learned, don't believe every piece of advice on these boards.

It’s not from these boards. Dean J has said this many times.

I have mixed feelings. DC is in at Michigan, but was going to feel pressure to go to UvA. I think Michigan wins in every category, but tuition and maybe weather. DC never lived UVA, but applied bc it made sense. Am I bummed, relieved or both?

It's all good news as your DC can move forward on their college journey! My DD has made the decision that a deferral means she will go where she's been accepted and is excited about that! She will not be waiting for the next round. Congrats to all the new Hoos!

Aannnnd cue those of us with kids that got in without FL throughout and many other APs. It depends on a bunch of factors.
Lesson learned by us too after much stress over something that was done. Congrats!

DD is in!! OOS, 3.9UW/4.7W, 12 APs, NMSF, national awards related to major + multiple state leadership positions. Only took 3 years of world language in high school (no AP) and didn't have max rigor in math/science APs. She was so stressed out—I'm so happy that it all worked out for her!

In state, deferred, what’s the chance of getting in?

In state deferred depends on the year, but between 5-20%.

MCPS has more inflation and higher ranges than VA schools. A 4.65 in MCPS is low

Seriously? Is that what it’s down to? Even for business?

Just because a sampling of a few get in without the four years IN HS, doesn't mean that is what is needed for most. It also doesn't mean that we are saying no one gets in without four years of a FL. UVA says this time and time again:

1. we want to see 4 years of foreign language taken in high school regardless of what happened before HS

2. We review apps holistically.

I'm guessing for everyone getting in without the four years of foreign language, there are 10+ who aren't getting in without it.

Yes. While 4 years foreign language has always been their recommendation, it has never been a requirement and does not keep a kid out if the rest of the app is good. Recommended does not mean required when it comes to rigor.

Just because you did the wrong thing and it worked doesn't mean it's the right thing or that it will work for others.

Another perspective. 4 years of foreign language are not going to save an app that isn't otherwise good enough. It doesn't tip the balance.

Unless...there is an algorithm with a points cutoff.
