I live out near Virginia Tech. SW VA actually has a bunch of unheralded small colleges. Ferrum College, Emory and Henry, Hollins University, Averett, UVA-Wise, Washington and Lee ($$), VMI, Mary Baldwin U. I've been out to Radford a few times recently. It's in a growth phase and good things seem to be happening there. Radford used to be VT's women's college. Radford has a nursing school presence in downtown Roanoke. VT's new medical school is in Roanoke along with its biomedical campus.
Emory & Henry just became a University a few months ago. I found it late in our search, so my daughter didn’t actually wind up applying. Looks like a nice little school, but it is quite far from … A lot. Radford’s history is pretty interesting - normal school (basically a teacher’s college), then part of vt for a while, and eventually became a co ed university. The current prez made the deal with VT for the Radford student section at VT football games. I wish I had seen the new arts building in its completed state in person - that was a big draw for my daughter, who is a dancer. I’ve seen pics and their news spaces are just gorgeous.
