So much for cars, produce and most of what people buy at Walmart and Target. I guess their bribe wasn't enough.

He has to get 60 senators to go along with that. Did he explain how he would do that? I doubt he could get 40 senators

Tariffs are something that a president can do without input from Congress.

This is false. This is a negotiation tactic to gain concessions and leverage.

No idea if tariffs will happen or not, but it sets up an adversarial relationship with the countries in question. See it for what it is and stop pushing the panic button right out of the gate.

Ahh yes, because that worked out so well last time:

“The strangest part," Bown says, was a provision that instructed China to buy an extra $200 billion of American-made stuff. That is, not only did China have to return to buying the amount of stuff it had bought before the trade war, it had to go above and beyond that. $200 billion above and beyond that. And it had to do so in two years; by the end of 2021. "We had never seen a trade agreement like that before," Bown says.

Now that it's 2022 — and China's deadline to buy boatloads of American-made stuff has passed — Bown recently crunched the numbers to see how much China ended up actually buying. "In the end," Bown says, "China actually bought none of the additional $200 billion of exports that it promised in the agreement."

Zilch. Nada.

But it's actually worse than that. While China did ramp up its purchases of U.S. agricultural products, when it comes to buying U.S. products and services overall, it still hasn't even returned to buying the amount of stuff it had bought from America before the trade war began.”

Honestly Americans buy way too much crap. Maybe this will be a silver lining of the orange dictator.

I do not shop at Walmart and am not one of those people who get excited over the Target dollar section or stuff at Five Below. I do not shop at SHEIN or H&M etc. So bring on the tariffs. I’d love for people to have to be more thoughtful about what they buy and look to places like Buy Nothing and Poshmark instead.

Also, I drive an EV (and live in a walkable neighborhood) so I don’t care about gas prices.

Thank you MAGA! Your inability to afford junk may save the planet.

Mot of our gas comes from canada and while true, canada is part of "america", it is a different country and trump is proposing a 25% tariff on that gas.

And exactly what is the problem with this?

That you will pay more for everything. You think things are expensive now? Just wait.

Yes,who do you think is going to pay the 25% increase?

There will be retaliatory tariffs on American goods. This will significantly increase unemployment and inflation.

Agreed. They aren't just going to let it slide by.

What concessions does he want from Canada? Are they dumping goods on the US? Do they have open borders?

The Chinese devalued their currency during the first Trump admin thanks to the tarriffs. Trump was right about China manipulating their currency and devaluing their currency against the dollar all those years ago to become a competitive giant and attract US companies. Trump is so good at making these calls I would believe it if someone told me he may have been a spy

Mexico indeed was threatened by tariffs by Trump and they immediately sent their military to the border with Guatemala to control migration

!! Trump knows how to negotiate deals and how to get the world in line and you always start with a high number or threat when negotiating in order to get the other side to freak out and panic or think you’re crazy. There’s a method to his madness

You watched too much of the Apprentice.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/interactive/2024/bob-woodward-trump-interview-1989/

THis is Trump on violations in his buildings:

Trump described his strategy of refusing to pay fines for the violations he received from property inspectors.
“From day one, I said f--- them,” Trump said of the inspectors.
“When I was in Brooklyn, inspectors would come around and they’d give me a violation on buildings that were absolutely perfect,” Trump recalled. “I’d say, ‘F--- you.’ And they’d give me more violations. And more. And for one month it was miserable. I had more violations — and they were unfounded violations. But they give it because what they wanted was if you ever paid ’em off, they’d always come back. So what happened to me, in one month they just said, ‘F--- this guy, he’s a piece of s---.’ And they’d go to somebody else.”

This may be a good business strategy from a money standpoint, but the thing is there were people living in those buildings. Those people were living in a property that didn’t meet standards.

We (the entire country) are all now living in the building that is below basic living standards. But trump will get more money, so he just doesn’t care about that.

Wow. That is why he chose to do it......it's the only thing he can do. So much for some grand strategy
