Everyone, please comment on Bezos' piece in WaPo!

The reason so many people don't trust the media is that (1) there has been a concerted and calculated campaign by the right to undercut any media that tries to print facts and (2) the media has been consolidated into the hands of a small group of billionaires. We all know they direct the spin.

Major newspapers editorial boards printing endorsements in the *opinion* section does not even come close to this list.

He mentions about talking to a certain elite. This guy, a Princeton educated billionaire, talking about the elite.

The media has become so biased. It used to be that Fox news and a few other right wing news sources were so openly biased, but not now. While nothing is as bad as Fox, NPR and the WaPo are getting pretty close. Both are so pro Kamala, there stories are almost read like their campaign created it. I can't htink of one critical piece that the WaPo published. Ditto with NPR.

To get balance, I have had to turn to other news sources, such as the WSJ, FT and BBC. Maybe that is why the WaPo has lost so many subscribers since 2020.

BTW, I am a Democrat, not a Maga loving trump supporter.

How can any business that relies on subscription not know how many they have now vs a week ago?

???

Why would any Wapo exec reveal that to the public? How would random partisan reporters learn of the number? You guys are naive as hell. The 200k is obvious bullcrap.

Twitter has ruined the brains of most journalists and most news content is just long form tweeting

Nope, WaPo has confirmed it and now it’s up to 250k.

And you know what the result will be from all the LWNJs cancelling their subscriptions? WaPo will likely have to terminate many of their journalists and other employees that keep the paper up and running.

https://slate.com/business/2024/10/washington-post-endorsement-election-cancel-jeff-bezos.html

When you cancel your subscription to the Post, you don’t punish Jeff Bezos. You punish the journalists who write such stories, including, ironically, the journalists who wrote and prepared to publish the very endorsement you’re so angry about. As one Post staffer told me, “The journalists who produce the Washington Post had no role in this decision, and yet they’re the only people who will be really hurt if you cancel your subscription.”

And if those journalists lose their jobs, what happens to them? The most clueless subscription-cancelers of all maintain that they’ll just get jobs elsewhere. Apparently there are still people out there who don’t know that the business model for journalism is currently in free fall, with only brand-name legacy organizations, like the Post and the New York Times, able to hold on by their fingernails while still providing in-depth reporting. Last year alone, 131 local newspapers shuttered, a loss that has fostered the increasing polarization of their communities. Even if you don’t feel sorry for middle-class people losing their jobs, this is a massive civic injury. Contributing to the death of journalism will not hurt Jeff Bezos; it will just make the United States a dumber, more dangerous place.

He'll simply cut overhead costs - aka fire journalists and other employees. If the WaPo goes under he'll simply move on to another project...meanwhile journalists and other employees unemployed and in today's AI driven society will be nearly impossible to find work. Yes, that's very smart.

It is not a subscriber's fault that the paper is run into the ground by Bezos.

Just about as smart as all of the overreactive virtue signaling liberal twits who canceled their subscription because things didn't
go theri way. Yup, has nothing to do with them.

Never thought much about newspapers endorsing a candidate in the past, but I would love to see less biased news. I turn on Fox and the I turn on CCN and then I turn on MSNBC. The spin put on each is crazy. I just want unbiased news w/o opinions. So I love that they are not endorsing anyone.

I am surprised it had that many subscribers.
