Seriously? Those 9th and 10th gradets playing on varsity are good enough and can handle it. That's why. |
This. Most sensible response on here. There was a time when freshman weren’t expected to come into HS with years of experience in a sport. The sports should only be available to those enrolled at the HS unless a roster cannot be filled. Another poster had a great point that some of these 8th graders will not even return to the HS for 9th. |
Guess it went over your head. |
FCPS HS don't seem to do this. |
LOL.. Please go ahead and lobby VHSL to change the rule then. |
Yes, it can be done in FCPS. An 8th grader can actually participate in a HS varsity sport if he/she is qualified, and that sport does not exist at the MS where he/she attends. I asked about this when my DS was an 8th grader at Longfellow MS and was informed by the HS AD that it was allowed. |
NP here. But do you know of any cases where FCPS has actually allowed it to happen? I'm sure there are 8th grade phenoms who are more talented than current high school students, but if this is happening in FC, I can't imagine it's that widespread a practice, no? |
I know some people who would try to do this and the parents and their children would be shunned. |
shunned because? |

Have you seen this thread. If you were being sarcastic then maybe post /s...otherwise, looking over this entire thread someone thinking 9th or 10th graders couldn't play varisty isn't that big of a stretch. |
Even though it’s a VHSL rule and not school specific, I never saw it happen at our kids large secondary school. Even the truly elite kids didn’t play on the HS teams until they were freshmen and they always made Varsity from the start. Our school was/is pretty competitive in most sports, too. |
Because they aren’t part of the community. Having 8th graders on a HS team ruins the experience for other team members. |
The PP said “ but I think that the way coaches think of it is that jv is for 8-10 and varsity is juniors and seniors.”. I disagreed and said that doesn’t make sense because theres almost always ninth and 10th graders that can make varsity. The coaches don’t look at it that way at all – they do whatever they can to make a winning team regardless upgrade. |
They weren’t talking about the kids ability, they are talking about the coaching decision/perspective. |
