We know for a fact that 8th graders made the YHS and WL teams and bumped actual YHS and WL students. It remains to be seen if they actually enroll at the school. And these 8th graders didn’t stand out as superstars during tryouts either. So inquiries about the coaching and club bias seem to be valid. Lame and certainly doesn’t help team morale or loyalty when those 8th graders can play club and most of the Fall clubs have many advanced opportunities for them. Whereas there are nearly none for HS students who don’t play for their teams. Agree that the coaches need to do better. There was little to no loyalty shown to returning HS players who dedicated their time and energy to the teams in previous years and to their school. And who maybe don’t have the resources to afford or play for club. It’s very sad at the HS level. Club I get it. But HS where the pride is to play for one’s school…. Very misguided and hurtful and ignorant of the coaches.
Lots to unpack except the rules allow for 8th graders to play on JV. Don't like the rules, work with APS to change the rules or get you kid better.
While I disagree with the rule, APS cannot "change" the rule. It is a VHSL rule.
FCPS HS don't seem to do this.
Yes, it can be done in FCPS. An 8th grader can actually participate in a HS varsity sport if he/she is qualified, and that sport does not exist at the MS where he/she attends. I asked about this when my DS was an 8th grader at Longfellow MS and was informed by the HS AD that it was allowed.
NP here. But do you know of any cases where FCPS has actually allowed it to happen? I'm sure there are 8th grade phenoms who are more talented than current high school students, but if this is happening in FC, I can't imagine it's that widespread a practice, no?
Even though it’s a VHSL rule and not school specific, I never saw it happen at our kids large secondary school. Even the truly elite kids didn’t play on the HS teams until they were freshmen and they always made Varsity from the start. Our school was/is pretty competitive in most sports, too.
