Bob Herbert of the NY Times, http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/21/opinion/21herbert.html?_r=1&hp=&adxnnl=1&adxnnlx=1282395672-8lghT7V/p7Xzal+a7VRRFw, notes this and other scary statistics. He, being black, calls on the black community to address the problem, but I think it's a problem for the entire country. In particular, it shows that discrimination still exists -- de facto rather than de jure perhaps -- but the results are devastating nevertheless. |
3% of white unmarried women had a baby in 2006. 7% of black unmarried women had a baby in 2006. So when you look at it from this perspective, white women are not all that much better. In fact, it turns out that there are more white children born out of wedlock than blacks. The reason that PP's statistic looks so dire compared to that of whites (28% vs. 72%) is that blacks are not having many children in wedlock whereas whites are having lots of children both in and out of wedlock. |
Sexism and racism are too the same thing! African American males got the vote before all women did! One's not better or worse than the other. They both infuse interaction with prejudice and bias. They both hold down good people. |
Agree. Think it's strange when I come across minority men who think it's ok to be sexist. |
Why these lengthy discussions on the opinion of one rich white elitist woman, who definitely knew what she was doing when she said her offending statements, and who has carefully calculated the media attention that she neede to get her name out, and has well rehearsed explanations for everything? |
