Hasn't stopped for decades; Went to HHS before the boundary changed - I would've ended up at Langley.
When we graduated - Langley average SAT was in the 1200s close to 1300 and Herndon was 1000s. Langley had children of famous people and Herndon had some too. During graduation - our group were glad that we didn't go to Langley. Our group meaning the part of Herndon that had high GPAs, high SAT scores, etc. Herndon has courtyards, JROTC, a parade, some history, and a bit of diverse culture. You can't measure it on US News. What people are not getting is that Herndon is kinda split, the kids that compete with Langley hardly see the kids the that don't. Once past 10th (PE) - you see the same set of people and then you walk through the hallways with a lot of strangers. You know them from 9th, 10th or middle school but really you don't hang with them. Talking about Herndon as one is not quite right; Langley is one, all the kids have the same goals and compete to get there. Herndon has people that want to go to Ivy, State, Vocational, or I wonder what they did after HS. And all of you see is an average. So Langley's average SAT is ... and Herndon is ... When you compare Herndon's Elite to Langley's Elite they are comparable. |
I went to a high school with a similar demographic to Herndon at it was just like this. After base level electives you will never see the rougher crowd anymore. The AP students are just like the AP students anywhere else. |
Sounds good. Please let the board know they should leave Langley pyramid alone. No reason to mess with a good thing. |
Maybe my fourth grade multiplication skills betray me, but x% times a positive number is always less than x% times a number bigger than that original number. If you want to argue that the rates that are paid are the same, be my guest, but the absolute number paid by the owners of the more expensive house is greater. Your argument is akin to saying .5x6 is equal to .5x8. But I’ll excuse your error because I know math is hard for some folks and/or you are trying to argue an absurd point. |
Did anyone ask if the 2022-23 Q3 grades were actual Q3 grades or averages of Q1-Q3? Because this would make huge difference. Stand-alone Q3 grades are usually low, which would explain the upward trends in averages she shows. The grades for this year are from rolling grade book snd should not be compared to standalone Q3 grades from last year. |
Herndon teacher here. We do not blame the parents. I mean we do in some cases for some things. But not for how this year went. We go not blame the parents of the kids. We do not take it out on kids. We care about our students. Please know this. |
So far no two implementations seem to be the same. May be your school will do it the right way. |
This. |
| Maybe I will go vote up the new FLE recommendations so that is what board/Reid work on for next couple years and so they are distracted from rolling out SBG to more schools. |
| It's not possible to do it correctly because it involves more work for grading and less reliance on homework and more reliance on tests so by its nature it's going to encourage teachers to do less in some area of grading to make up for separating out grading by standards so your kid will get less grading somewhere else and also because of the reliance on testing for grades, they will automatically get less feedback on formative work |
Yep. And the concern trolls don’t even have kids at either school. In short, their goal is to tell other people’s kids where to go to school. Report them if they continue to derail this thread. |
Crickets - as usual. |
Sadly, SBG will also make it easier to automate the lessons and tests. Students are expected to teach themselves more because they get far less feedback. I would t be surprised if in 10years students will be plugging into a video and taking what will amount to computer based training courses. Kids need more than that but it’s becoming so that teachers just talk more at students. I don’t think teachers want to teach this way but this is what it is boiling down to. |
