I didn’t even know this about Gorsuch. Jesus. |
Unfortunately for you, Gorsuch isn't a university president or in higher education. He is not an academic. Some of you seem to be struggling with this concept. The rules for higher education has always been very strict about plagiarism. I do not excuse what Gorsuch may have done according to this Hill article from 2017, but Harvard violated its own tenets and rules with Claudine Gay. And therein lies the problem. |
According to this Harvard Crimson piece, written by a member of the Harvard Honor Council, a student committing similar infractions would be severely penalized: https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2023/12/31/honor-council-member-gay/ |
That's because it was nothing more than an 11th hour hit job from left wing media.

Wow. IMO there are not enough pushback on academia to have sound practices and research. They should be able to defend themselves. |
Academia is highly corrupt on all sides of the political spectrum. I think if you really dug into the research of most tenured or tenure track professors, you’d find a large amount of plagiarism and a lot of coverups of other types of bad behavior. The STEM fields that are very male dominated - not necessarily biology and chemistry which attract a lot of pre-med students and a good gender balance, but more physics, mathematics, and certain engineering disciplines - have shockingly high rates of sexual harassment and the universities absolutely cover up for the professors. Especially the well known ones. |
If you're bothered by high compensation packages paid to academics at liberal institutions, take a gander at Liberty U's list of most highly-compensated individuals. These are their three highest-paid staff members: $3,461,234: Danny H Freeze Jr, Head Coach, Football $1,368,036: Ritchie L McCay, Head Coach, Basketball $1,048,277: Jerry Prevo, Trustee, President https://paddockpost.com/2023/11/15/executive-compensation-at-liberty-university- 2022/#:~:text=%241%2C048%2C277%3A%20Jerry%20Prevo%2C%20Trustee%2C,EVP%20for%20Enrollment%20and%20Marketing As an aside, I personally am more bothered by the high salaries paid to athletic coaches at universities, even though they are considered moneymakers. |
That's true, but incomplete. The far left is also destroying our society's institutions by rejecting many of their foundational philosophies. Academia is a great example: many on the far left clearly believe in replacing inquiry with indoctrination. (See, e.g, the Columbia School of Social Work, link below). The radicals on both ends of the spectrum are truly awful. We need the center to take control again. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/07/opinion/social-work-columbia-ideology.html?mwgrp=c-dbar&unlocked_article_code=1.F00.-K96.ReWjn_eNWE_B&hpgrp=k-abar&smid=url-share) |
Great. Let's run his work through a plagiarism detector and double check that. |
I actually think we make too big a deal over plagiarism. We all borrow, build and pay tribute to the work of others; there is very little original thinking anywhere, so I wish we could relax the "rules" a little. It is such a stressful part of academics. With that being said, the rules are the rules so credit must be given, especially by those setting and enforcing them. |
What for? You're just looking for tit for tat because you're angry Gay got caught out as a shameless plagiarist and mediocre "academic" that you're running around like a crybaby looking for blame everywhere else except where it solely belongs: Gay and the Harvard board. |
Hahahahaha. The left wing is doing that all on their own. No help or push from the right is needed. |
