Because that's the reason such an unqualified person was hired to begin with.

What's the reason? Your use of the word "that" is ambiguous.

Not to mention that this started with her testimony before Congress.
And, Harvard was well aware of the accusations of plagiarism long before her testimony, but tried to cover it up.
It is very much political.

For the people at Harvard, maybe. Why is this of national importance?

"We should note that Claudine Gay has not been accused of stealing anyone's ideas in any of her writings. She has been accused of sort of more like copying other peoples writings without attribution. So it's been more sloppy attribution than stealing anyone's ideas."
If only there was a term for that.........

I'm a professor. In my experience, students who plagiarize do so because they lack strong writing skills and/or do not understand the topic sufficiently to write about it in their own words.

The reality is that in trying to have a more diverse student body and a more diverse workforce, there are some (certainly not all, or even most) people admitted/hired who are simply lack the preparation needed in order to be successful. It is a problem that no one wants to talk about. I was just talking to a colleague (themselves a member of an underrepresented group) about this recently. It was brought up by them, not me. The university tells us that every opportunity (e.g. special research programs, fellowships, honors, etc.) should be available to every student who wants to participate, so they can pat themselves on the back about how diverse these programs are. But they aren't telling us what to do when students who want to be in these programs do not have the skillsets needed in order to do well. Are we supposed to try to close the gap, or lower our standards? I suspect the latter as it not possible to close the gap in terms of critical evaluation, synthesis, and writing in a matter of months. It is not students' fault that their earlier educational experiences were not as rigorous as those coming from more well-resourced backgrounds. But we can't pretend these things no longer matter.

No. They need to do an extensive search and hire someone based on MERIT.
No more hiring people due to inherent or arbitrary attributes.

You must be a MAGA troll, perhaps Putin himself.

The sad thing is I can’t tell if you are being serious or sarcastic

The pattern of Gay's failing upward goes back to her earliest days. She made tenure at elite universities on astonishingly weak academic output, including data that couldn't be replicated nor would she release them when once asked for it. Then as a dean and university administrator, she established a controversial history of badly treating professors who differed from her ideologically, including a black Harvard professor whose research contradicted certain "woke" beliefs about the police treatment of black Americans.

The real failure here isn't Gay, who simply took advantage of the opportunities given to her, but the people who gave her those opportunities in the first place. That's the scandal. And that is not going anywhere soon.

As someone who copyedits scholarly work, I can tell you that improper attribution is a common problem, regardless of race. That said, a president of Harvard should be above reproach in that regard.

Exactly.

Which is why this case was so incredible. Not just a student but the University President.

If it does, I can't imagine it amounts to much compared to the national budget.

I was briefly curious about what she had done. Now, I’m going to go back to not giving much thought to who the president of Harvard is at any given point.

I think you are referencing Matt Egan (College of NJ).

Steve Guest simply posted the insane explanation by Egan.
