Why are OOS flagships so popular these days?

Maryland with B1G Ten UMD, Annapolis, Georgetown and Hopkins all in a 30 mile radius is a superior academic environment.

I have no issue with UMD but Virginia has better affordable options for the highest achievers; it just does. I grew up in Virginia and went to UVA. I would also have been happy at W&M, or at least I considered going there. In-state was what my parents could afford and it was a fantastic deal. My family is in Maryland and I do not want to limit my kids to in-state.

NP: VT is great for a few majors, not so great for many others. I'm not a UVA booster (didn't go there, don't have a kid there), but the primary reason I know people from NoVA go to an OOS flagship is they didn't get into UVA and they aren't CS/engineering majors so VT isn't that compelling and they want the big school/big sports vibe so W&M isn't that compelling. It's not being a UVA booster, it just seems to be a common story.

VT is actually wonderful for many majors, not just STEM.

dp.. I don't think either of those people are great successes in terms of entertainment.

UVA boosters love to mention how many Rhodes Scholars UVA produced as a marker of how UVA is top rated.

So, why wouldn't the success of alumni be any different?
