Why are OOS flagships so popular these days?

UVA is ranked at #3 for public schools in US News. VT is ranked #23. So is your kid going to a public school ranked between #4 and #22?

People like the PP are so transparent. No doubt a UVA booster!

NP: VT is great for a few majors, not so great for many others. I'm not a UVA booster (didn't go there, don't have a kid there), but the primary reason I know people from NoVA go to an OOS flagship is they didn't get into UVA and they aren't CS/engineering majors so VT isn't that compelling and they want the big school/big sports vibe so W&M isn't that compelling. It's not being a UVA booster, it just seems to be a common story.

VT is actually wonderful for many majors, not just STEM.

Some students also complain in state is high school 2.0. I sort of doubt it at a 40K student pop school but I hear it a lot from girl parents.

It's not. That's something people say when they actually have no clue.

Often it's sour grapes/face-saving for people who don't get into their flagship.

Yep. Said in a lofty, above-it-all voice.

This right here shows why UVA and UMD aren’t in the same league. UVA in state rejects are getting into UMD out of state.

PP. And you're a jerk. Thrilled to go where he's wanted rather than UVA doing him a favor.

I don’t mean “reject” in the pejorative sense at all. I’m just saying.

Sure, it's perfectly fine--but it's not exceptional for much outside of STEM. And as a tech school, it's going to have a strong bias towards that---which is not what most strong kids in humanities/social sciences/arts etc. are going to want if they have other options.

I have two kids who attend/ed VT and both were humanities majors. VT was their top choice school and has served them exceptionally well. You're certainly welcome to your opinion, but it doesn't resemble the reality we've experienced.

This right here shows why UVA and UMD aren’t in the same league. UVA in state rejects are getting into UMD out of state.

Population of Maryland 6.2 million UMD flagship UG 30,800 1/4 OOS

Population of Virginia 8.7 million UVA flagship UG 17,000 1/3 OOS

Maryland serves its state’s students much better than Virginia. Bragging about how well qualified students are not being admitted to a public flagship is not anything to be proud of. If I were a taxpayer in Virginia, I would not be pleased with these numbers

UMD is a great school. Not really understanding why such hate is geared toward it. Computer Science alone is top tiered at UMD... among many other majors.

UMD doesn't match the options provided by UVA + W&M + VT

Three flagships in Virginia eh? Try harder.

So you’re saying that it takes 3 public schools in the state of Virginia to compare to UMD?

The claim was "Maryland serves its state's students much better than Virginia". It does not.

No. UMD does not compare, nor does it provide similar options.

It’s a B1G ten juggernaut good in all the rigorous majors with alumni that shape the world. uva is a fine acc school excellent in the non rigorous majors.
