And even those two schools are well below outbreak levels.

When do you think the covid-doomsdayers will admit they were wrong? Shouldn’t dead bodies be piling up outside of hospitals by now?

If you want a sobering statistic regarding how effective the mask mandates were, look no further than the county website. From the start of covid up until September, 20, 2021, there were 520,236 confirmed cases of covid. Exactly a year later, 722,430 new cases were confirmed. And if anyone says, but they were mild, I'd encourage you to click on the deaths. The daily deaths spike in February 22 competes well with the summer and winter of 2020.

https://coronavirus.maryland.gov/

If McKnight wants to keep everyone in-person no matter how infected a school becomes, and is fine with not mandating masks, all I can say is it's not helping her "equity" agenda any.

"Nationwide, Black people have died at 1.4 times the rate of white people."
https://covidtracking.com/race/

Deaths have been stable since lifting the mask mandate. Did you really not know that? The last peak was around Jan 20th, after which it plummeted before stabilizing at current levels. Masks didn't change that.

Actually, Montgomery County suspended indoor masking (not MCPS) on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 12:01 a.m. It could be argued that the January / February 2022 spike was proximately caused by that order.

What does weather have to do with it? They still have school inside (and largely unmasked). Over the summer, the doomsayers on this board said that MCPS should have been brought to its knees by now. I know it's frustrating for them that they haven't got the Armageddon they're seeking.

Colder weather brings kids inside when not at school, leading to more community cases which then spread more in schools. Inverse down in Texas and Florida as hot weather chased people inside all summer. Very different curves between hot and cold climates the last couple years.

Agree. Another change is that past school years started with very low infection rates. 0's mostly. This year is different. It's a much different pattern. I wish MCPS kept statistics on re-infections since that would determine if there's another issue going on here. I'd be concerned if the same children were becoming re-infected, especially more than twice. That wouldn't be good.

We don't have accurate numbers as this is all self reporting. This is why we need regular testing.

We're off to a rocky start to the new school year.

On Monday, 157 students and 22 staff new infections were reported, with 1,143 infections from of about 174K (160K students plus 14K staff). If you recall from last year, it took a few weeks to reach this type of new infection rate per school (see data below) during the January spike. It is likely that lax school sanitization / distancing / masking, etc. (if occurring at all) is a significant contributing factor.

On, Donald. We know you think therapy and bleach are effective against COVID, but they aren't. COVID is being transmitted at a high rate right now in most of the country. Board of Education member Scott Joftus isn't doing his job this week because he is out with COVID like many, many MCPS teachers and staff.

What does weather have to do with it? They still have school inside (and largely unmasked). Over the summer, the doomsayers on this board said that MCPS should have been brought to its knees by now. I know it's frustrating for them that they haven't got the Armageddon they're seeking.

We don't have accurate numbers as this is all self reporting. This is why we need regular testing.

How would that change anything?

It probably wouldn't but I'd like to know to know if its safe for my kids to return in person.

What is your cutoff for that? And how did you come up with it?

I think they might reconsider their arrogance down the road. As I learn more about the disease, the more I'm glad I stopped paying attention to the anti-masker and "covid is over" comments.

"Repeatedly catching Covid-19 appears to increase the chances that a person will face new and sometimes lasting health problems after their infection, according to the first study on the health risks of reinfection."

"They also had higher risks for lung and heart problems, fatigue, digestive and kidney disorders, diabetes and neurologic problems."

"If you asked me about reinfection maybe a year and a half ago, I would tell you that maybe I have a patient here or there, but it's really, really rare," Al-Aly said. That's not true anymore, though."

"Common new diagnoses after reinfections included chest pain, abnormal heart rhythms, heart attacks, inflammation of the heart muscle or the sac around the heart, heart failure and blood clots. Common lung issues included shortness of breath, low blood oxygen, lung disease, and accumulation of fluid around the lungs"

Ok, fine. You're happy, we're happy.

At what point would you keep your kids home?

They are already home. Not everyone choose to return right away.

Right away? Do you need to look at a calendar? Do you know what year it is?
