Liberal Americans have more right to fly the flag than anyone given that the the last Republican President tried to overturn an election.

And was a huge criminal.

And Republicans still support him.

My relatives fought in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Most of my family has been here since the 1600s.

My father was a Vietnam Vet.

I'll be damned if some conservative gets to tell me I'm not American enough to fly the flag.

I left the GOP in the Bush administration over Iraq. And I hate Trump.

But I consider myself to be a proud patriotic American and I display a US flag.

If you support Trump, put out a Trump flag. But don't conflate the US with Trump. The USA was here long before Trump and will continue on without Trump.

The american flag stands for the democracy of our republic and the Rule of Law.

This shouldn’t be a divisive political issue, but the current climate seems to have put us there.

Im not a liberal and wish more people would adopt your attitude. I hope you do fly a flag. I also fear that the left is trying to burn everything down and it would be nice to see the left demonstrate that they love America "warts and all."

Except flying the American flag is jingoistic and patriotic, and says you’re proud of this country. Which is definitely at-odds with how progressives view America. They see this country as something to be embarrassed about and apologize for.

So it’s a little hard to rationalize flying our flag while at the same time being embarrassed about being an American and celebrating a country that you believe can’t do anything right and was founded by white men that you viscerally hate.


That’s why liberals can’t simply fly an American flag.

They’d need a modified American flag with a giant asterisk in the upper right corner.

This is all why I defected from the left. Am I alarmed about some of what happened in the Trump administration and among some Trump followers? Yes. But I like America and respect and believe in the ideals, while the left has spent several years putting forth an argument that the US is inherently evil and none of our issues can be fixed. So, while they claim the right is a threat to democracy, the left says you are a Nazi if you fly our flag. I mean, which one is it? I dont believe they want to preserve a nation they are openly contempuous of, that they loudly scorn. This is not the left of the 90s, when democrats flew flags, honored police, and respected the poor and working class.

I agree that the left should be more clear that pointing out the country's flaws is not done out of hate. Loyalty doesn't mean pretending everything is perfect. We should always be striving to do better, and we can't do better if we don't know where the problems are.
