So? Multiple people here are bragging about being in college themselves at 17 or sending 17 year olds off to college. What do you think happens on campus? |
Everyone with a September birthday will start college at 17, so I'm not sure what there is to brag about. Besides, do these people believe that someone who starts college the day before their 18th birthday at Cal-state Nowhere has more to brag about than someone who starts college on their 18th birthday at MIT? |
Again, in modern day MD, and anywhere else that has 8/31 or 9/1 cutoff, this is not the case. September birthdays who abided by cutoffs will turn 19 as soon as they get to college. State by state cutoffs and early entrance affect this of course, so you cannot say *everyone*. |
Not where I'm from. My DD has a Sept birthday with a cut off of 9/1 will be going on 19 when college starts, like a lot of other September birthdays around the country. But people certainly are bragging about their youngest of age kids being 17 for a hot minute in college. But since those kids are also always so mature, then there should be no issues being around 23 year olds. I still don't see what the PPs issue is regarding age. |
Why is that a dog whistle ? Is that not the policy? (As it should be for some students). |
Not really. I have a child who was 12 when 8th grade began and turned 13 in September. A couple classmate were 14 when the school year began and turned 15 in the spring. At no point was my child who is 12 and was sent "on time" in the same grade as a child who was 15. They were 12 when a few other children were 14. Then my child was 13 when they were 15. NBD. |
Wrong. |
So it didn't make you angry that your son was being outshined by these kids for the sole reason that were more ridiculously older him and not because they were genuinely more gifted than him? |
One DD does have a teammate who is 2 grades below, still a good teammate. It is a bit odd for the kids, according to DD, but I think it's my child's particular age due to the big difference between kids who have already been in middle school for a few years and kids who are in elementary. I think it's probably less noticeable in HS when it's not really unusual to have freshman playing on the same team as seniors and juniors. |
| There was a girl who turned 15 in March of 8th grade in my dd's class - she was way more mature and academically advanced than most of the kids in 8th- I'm sure she's going to love being still in High School at 19... |
She is not more mature or advanced just older. |
Does it make you angry when.a younger child I’m the same grade outshines your held back kid? |
What? It's the older kid who has the advantage over the younger kid, so there's nothing impressive about an older kid outshining a younger kid. If, however, a younger kid outshines an older kid, it means that that younger kid is genuinely more gifted than that older kid and genuinely deserved to win whatever competition was between them, so there was no cheating involved and therefore, no call for anger. |
+1 I bet her parents are simple swelling with pride to know that she's outshining kids as much as 21 months younger than her. |
Sorry you suck at math. |
