why are the anti-redshirters always so bad at basic math?

Watch out, OP, DCUM is very supportive of redshirting so their kids can be the biggest, fastest, (they think) highest performing….

Before you redshirt or not, do some math.

My redshirted kid will be 18 when he graduates because his birthday is July, but if he was born in the later winter or spring (the earliest I've seen redshirting) he'd be a young 19.

My non redshirted kid will be 17.

So, no 20 year olds.

Whose math? It's very common for private schools to require red-shirting and then to add another year before middle school or high school. In Baltimore they add another year before 1st. So yes, a 20 year old senior is mathematically correct. But very difficult to parent.

Of course they are! They were kept back by their own parents!

Or 19, for that matter.

I don’t know what level is “common” but my 8th grader has at least three friends/classmates/teammates who turned 15 in 8th grade.

Is there an age when schools cut you off and say sorry your kid is 10 so he can’t be in kindergarten?

I don’t know if any that were 15 before school got out but my son has 3 friends that turned or will turn 15 in June or July after 8th. This will happen to any child with a summer birthday who was redshirted for kindergarten. If anyone had a spring birthday and was redshirted they will turn 15 in 8th.

My son thinks he is on the young side since he has an early spring birthday and went on time. He just has a lot of friends with summer and fall birthdays who are 6-9 months older. It doesn’t make much of a difference by 8th grade.

In kindergarten, DS told me that his classmate was 8. I was pretty shocked. I later learned that kid told all sorts of stories.

LOL, yes. I remember the one who went up with his dad in a plane and dropped bombs on his back yard. My child was very disappointed that he wasn't allowed to do that.

When my ds ws in kindergarten, he told his class he fell down a mountain.

Mine was not redshirted and will be 14 and 8 months when he finishes 8th. He’s massive so will look like an adult.

Yikes! When my son entered K (it was a K-8 school) one of the 8th graders was 15. He was an utter nightmare and changed the ENTIRE atmosphere of the school. When he graduated, there was a huge, collective sigh of relief.

On another note, I had a friend in high school that turned 19 our senior year. Super nice, smart guy - we never knew why he had been held back/redshirted/whatever.

My 5th grader had a 13 yo in their class- apparently the child was born outside of the US and had to start kindergarten quite late.

He was 15 at the end of 8th grade, but not the beginning.
My ex graduated HS at 19. He started school a year late and was held back in elementary school.
