Instead they are choosing to keep him in the elite private school two hours away. Don’t tell me it would be traumatic for his kid to have to move mid year through his 11th grade year. Military members - and other government employees - move every few years and their kids change school mid year all of the time, including at the high school level. If they survive it, Younkin’s kid would survive it. Once again, though, different rules apply for the rich kids. Youngkin decided to run for Governor while his kid was still in high school, he should have thought about the imaging of that. He would have a lot more respect as governor when he signs EO’s about how public schools are run if his kid actually attended a Virginia public school. And yes, I know Dem politicians send their kids to private school as well. Agree with you on most. Which is why it should be mentioned again that in ACPS our superintendent and the chair of the school board send their kids to private school. It's actually somehow worse, since they're avoiding the actual school system they make day to day policy decisions on. Like mandatory/non mandatory masking.

The emergency clause passed the senate. 3 Ds for, 1 R against, rest as expected on party lines. I assume it will pass the house on party lines also. So it will be law on 3/1.

Prince William has already said they will align their mitigation to the law.

Chap Petersen’s kids are in FCPS. That’s why we have SB 1303 from last year and SB 739 now, because Chap’s family lives public school reality.

I strongly dislike the governor, but isn’t it pretty disruptive for military families to move do much? It’s hardly an aspirational model.

I think the point is that many families move due to career choices. Running for governor was very much a career choice. There is a huge amount of elitism and hypocrisy in keeping your kid in a private school whyich requires masks (and this thus safer) while forcing families in public school (who cannot afford private school) to send their kids to school in a mask optional environment.

His kid IS at a mask optional school. The 3 week difference isn't meaningful. There really isn't any coherent scientific reason to require masks in school at this point. Most NOVA schools are going to maintain 90%+ masking rates anyway, at least until spring.

Exactly. If so few people choose to unmask then doesn’t that prove it should be mask optional? That allows the families whose kids are not doing well with masking to opt out and barely moves the needle. Of course, the reality is that most parents are afraid of being socially ostracized for wanting masks off their kids, but everyone can see which way the wind is blowing and it will soon be socially acceptable to go mask free. At that point the mask always crowd will have FOMO.

Well I support Universal masking but I'm not having my kid mask if others in their classes are not showing them the same courtesy. I'm happy to participate in a group mitigation effort but not planning to give a special priviledge to a whiny subset of people that only cares about themselves.

The new info is one person in a KN95 has more protection than two in surgical masks. It's 2022 - not 2020 anymore.
