Problem for DeSantis is the primary isn't going to be just him and Trump. And the polls that include multiple candidates show his support gets split out while Trump's sticks together.

Uh oh.

“Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis expressed support for privatizing Medicare and Social Security during his first campaign for Congress in 2012, giving political rivals who have pledged to protect the programs an opening to attack him ahead of DeSantis’ expected run for president in 2024.

Former President Donald Trump and Democrats have already signaled plans to weaponize DeSantis’ comments against him, should he announce for president, and subsequent votes in Congress for non-binding budget resolutions that privatized Medicare and raised the retirement age to 70.

A CNN KFile review of comments from DeSantis’ 2012 congressional campaign found he repeatedly said he supported plans to replace Medicare with a system in which the government paid for partial costs of private plans or a traditional Medicare plan. In one interview with a local newspaper, DeSantis said he supported “the same thing” for Social Security, citing the need for “market forces” to restructure the program.”

Meh. That’s boring policy stuff. All DeSantis has to say is “Groomer” and 70% of Republicans will vote for him.

I don't think that's how it works

Dems are usually terrible at messaging, but the messaging about Republicans wanting to cut SS has been very effective this time

I don't think most older people think of SS as "boring policy stuff" - it's "how I pay my bills"

You're right. But isn't it that god awful "socialism" that Republicans like to rail against?

All DeSantis has to do is say, “President Biden as a first-term senator in 1975 introduced a bill that would have limited budget authority for all federal programs to between four and six years, which experts say would have required new legislation to fund Medicare, Social Security and other federal programs.
The Biden measure bore striking similarities to the plan Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) unveiled in 2022 to sunset all federal legislation after five years”

Sure - yes, snark away. Also, this is a real opportunity for Ds to win back some of these voters. The ones who don't care about the attack on the Capitol, the lies, the crazy culture war stuff - any of that. But who do care if they can make rent and buy food.

That doesn’t fit on a bumper sticker, and 2012 is a lot more recent than 1975.

He's also the incumbent with a record of delivering on his domestic and foreign policy goals. He also just gave an effective defense of social security and medicare at the state of the union. No one believes for a second that the Democrats are looking to defund the social safety net. But please continue grasping at straws.

Well, looks like DeSantis doesn't want guns around after all, check out the email from his campaign event. That would not look good to his crowd though, and he knew it.
