Dr. Duran must go

I think that the people who circle the wagons and defend APS and Duran no matter what are being short sighted. I'm a Biden and McAuliffe voter but now we've got Youngkin and Miyares because people are so angry about the schools. Probably a Republican Congress next January. You might even get Trump back. If you keep saying people are dumb and angry and unreasonable for wanting their kids to be in school and receive high quality instruction, they are going to stop listening to you and vote for the other guys.

Shame on anyone who voted for Youngkin just because of schools. Sayings like "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" are cute, but when that leads someone back to supporting Trump (and Trump cronies) its downright dangerous, idiotic, and a slew of other things. Look, I get that people want their kids in school. I want my kids in school. I hate some of the things APS has done, but I appreciate a lot more. It is a hell of a lot easier to sit on this anonymous board criticizing people for how they're acting in an unprecedented an constantly evolving situation than to actually be the one(s) making the tough choices. There are enough angry people on this board that I think it is clear any superintendent would have people calling for him/her to go. Its been barely 6 weeks since I first heard of omicron and now we're in the largest surge of the pandemic. Models vary in predicting when the surge will end. Its all just constantly changing.

Shaming people for their votes is a great way to win them back next time. You don't have to like the reasons people vote the way they do, but those people are here, and they vote. In fact, many of them were voting for Democratic candidates until recently. The only way to win is to win those votes back somehow.

I find that very difficult to believe. This is an anonymous board after all, but if it is true you are complicit in anything the Republicans do that is antithetical to social progress. But you knew that.

I'm not that poster but my husband was a big Bernie supporter, canvassed for him and did some other campaign stuff. And he voted for Youngkin on schools. In general I would say that he was all in on Bernie's platform on economic inequality and is less concerned with some of the Democrats' social issues like guns and abortion. He's pro gun control and pro-choice but these are top line issues for him and so I don't think he had a huge issue with holding his nose and voting for Youngkin. It is what it is (and I didn't vote for Youngkin so don't feel the need to come at me on this).

Ha ha. I won't come at you. I find you more believable. But let me know if you ever want to explain to your husband why his vote for Youngkin was a mistake. I'd be happy to join you, all in good fun of course.

I'm not the wife; but I think he'll learn why his vote was a mistake in due time. He won't need your "good fun" explaining.

People on message boards aren't "winning back" votes.

Adults vote for the candidates based on policies/platforms, not because they are mad about some anonymous poster on a mommy website. Or what some local official did.

Probably not. Trying to be friendly.

For those of you saying Duran has never explicitly stated he intends to remain in person for instruction, besides the fact that he has discussed this at school board meetings, here you go in writing per today’s superintendent message:

Keeping Schools Open Amid the Surge – Maintaining safe, consistent in-person learning is our priority. APS will maintain in-person learning except in limited instances to address high transmission in a classroom or school. Switching any class or school to virtual learning—even for a short period of time—will be a last resort.

Doesn't matter what Duran actually says. Those irrational fckers are fact resistant and lie every chance they get.

Can we just let this thread die now? This thread is so toxic and a waste of everyone's time.

Isn't that the point of DCUM?

Anonymous wrote:By any metric, Dr. Duran has failed APS students. Under his watch, children are barely even learning anything and the test scores reflect that. Teacher compensation has stagnated while administrative positions keep being added at Syphax with in sight. Our kids cannot go another school year with him at the helm. He is steering APS into a death spiral which it may not recover from.

Most of what you are saying either was an issue before he arrived, some of which he is already working to change, or pandemic related which really, can’t be all his fault. I appreciate that he has begun to identify issues and solve problems that were created long before he came to APS.

Not only Duran but Barbara Kannien and Reid Goldstein need to go. We need to clean house.

It's sad that this statement is still here and very true.

I think the person name calling all the people criticizing Duran without any argument against the parents valid points probably is Barbara Kannien😉

I haven't seen a valid point yet.

Duran is fine.
Goldstein can go.

What's the issue with Kannien?
