Dr. Duran must go

It's sad that this statement is still here and very true.

We've had have 3 other new board members over the past 4 years. They clearly didn't make an improvement; so why harp on just Goldstein and Kanninen? What positive changes or improvements did O'Grady contribute? And what impact have Diaz-Tores and Priddy had? ALL of them have been in office all through COVID.

Duran is fine.
Goldstein can go.

What's the issue with Kannien?

She caters to her voting base. She goes whichever way the wind is blowing and is easiest. She is clueless and in denial about high-poverty/FRL south Arlington schools. She's been on the board for several years as APS has continued to spiral downward.

true. We moved to Arlington mainly for the schools and it has been a huge disappointment.

Hard agree.

Today proved everything we have been saying about Duran. His mojo is “ schools closed “, and “ stay safe” and once again he delivered again on this useless message and stayed true to his brand. This guy has to be fired.

It was the right call for the info they had at the time.

As long as the schools are closed, everyone is safe. But that’s not the point of schools!

I support him. Many districts are without a Superintendent after the awful conditions this pandemic created. Not an easy job and I have hope he will turn things around and we should focus on supporting our schools instead of criticizing or wasting time and money looking for someone to replace him.

Agree. I haven't agreed with everything he has done but the criticisms over closing based on weather forecasts are ridiculous.

Given the number of teachers out with Covid and lack of subs, APS still has to close if FCPS closes or calls a virtual day. With the number of APS teachers with kids in Fairfax schools, APS can’t cobble together enough classroom coverage. It was a done deal once FCPS made their call.

They can if they tell teachers “no, you need to make other childcare arrangements or it will be considered an unexcused absence.” Teachers need to make arrangements for snow days, too.

So leave your kids alone at home if you must, but come teach my kid?
Do you think teachers take this lightly? At my school, they would gladly come teach if they were allowed to bring their non-APS, fully vaxxed kids. They’re taking this from their accrued leave, this is not a “free” day for them.
