Anti-Racism Assembly Today?

if your drunk babbling aunt is SO RACIST that a six year can see it, why aren't you calling her out yourself?

Except this wasn’t age appropriate. My son said his father and all family members on his father’s side of the family “are racist because they are white.” I’m not white. So my son wants to know why I would marry a racist white person. This is a damn mess

This is an uncomfortable topic of conversation and it sounds like the principal did a solid amount of frontloading prior to the session.

Oh yeah, principal’s a real peach. God forbid she smile at a white kid lest she betray her whole race

SP: you wonder why they wanted anti racist training at Janney huh

This is all so interesting and alarming. For context my kids go to a EOTP DCPS school that is gentrifying but has more black kids than white kids. My children did learn about slavery and police brutality by K, but the school also used Black History month as a celebration of black excellence. The knowledge they passed on was shocking to my kid bc of the unfairness of being targeted for skin color, which you can't control. He came away with that message which I strongly support. But it was all very gently and carefully communicated.

FWIW, im a POC (not black) and had my first experience with racism in Kindergarten. Many friends of color had their first racist experience with a peer at the same age. So I strongly believe white children need to learn about it by then so they do not perpetrate these harms against children of color.

But this event seems alarming for some reason!

The assembly was a well known workshop for the “Anti-racist Fight Club.” It’s been around a while. They have a website, ok?

It was completely and utterly unacceptable for PK-1 graders. Completely. Many teachers were aghast at the content. We literally put in applications today for other schools as a result of it, and we know other parents now looking too.

I was in a meeting after school with your principal and can confirm this is false.

I don’t even know what this response means. Why in the world would the principal know if parents are applying nevertheless looking at other schools. I’m the person who put in two apps today. I haven’t told anyone at the school. I have never even said a word to our new principal...ever...

That is not my impression of her at all.

I think PP thought you were a teacher talking about teachers. Wasn’t clear to me either.

Our child’s teacher sent an email to all parents apologizing for the admittedly inappropriate assembly and saying how they are trying to “fix” things through class discussion

Not a teacher but have a position in the school. Teachers were not happy. Several sent emails to all parents in the class apologizing for the assembly and noting it was inappropriate and caused harm

Well yea, if you weren’t a teacher how would you have known that many teachers were aghast and submitting applications.

Teachers were aghast based on the emails they sent to parents acknowledging as much. I wasn’t saying teachers are applying for new jobs, I was saying parents are considering other schools. I put in two school applications today for my children for next year as a result of this mess.

Yes. I don’t want to put the class or teacher but the effect it had on the kids in the class was extremely significant.

I asked my third grader and he said he enjoyed the presentation, that he liked being able to ask the guy questions, and that there was no violent rhetoric. He also said he didn’t get the Fist Book.

Post email text or it didn't happen.

Wow, that sounds a little extreme. I mean, I get all the criticism of this if that’s how your kids experienced it (mine was ok but is on the older side), but if it was really perceived as such a failure, don’t you think that they will not repeat this? Are you worried that this is going to be a frequent occurrence from now on? I can’t imagine leaving an otherwise great school over this, unless you’ve had prior problems and this is the last straw. Also, I don’t think private schools are immune to this kind of stuff… Maybe parochial schools are.
