Telling people to not speculate via gossip and hearsay is woke? Here I was thinking it was just common sense as an adult to not spread half-truths because that's how misinformation is spread. This is also funny given that someone literally shared a prejudiced statement about "black youth" just above, proving my point. |
+10000 if girls are going to have babies in high school let's at least make sure they get at a very minimum a high school diploma. And for those who don't agree, keep in mind babies grow, they become kids who enter school, and yes, you want a mom who finishes high school who can read to their child and help them with basic homework. So yes, help them finish high school and help them get as far as they can in their education so that they can actually help their child get an education. |
Honestly I'm incredibly frustrated by the dialogue about this situation, especially on the ACPS Facebook group. People tear down every suggestion. SROs are racist. Metal detectors are racist. Building another high school is racist. Being worried about the violence and wanting to do something about it is racist/white panic. I give up. I'm a Democrat but this is just too much for me. |
I feel you. It’s like nobody really wants solutions and we are stuck on this treadmill of no action being taken. One lady came up with every explantation and excuse possible for why we could never ever have a second high school. How is it every other jurisdiction manages more than one high school but it’s an apparent impossibility in Alexandria? This is something else. |
I am not part of the Facebook group anymore but I think that a lot of the problem is unwillingness to acknowledge the validity of portions of the views of the opposing positions and some assumptions that somehow Alexandria is unique and does not potentially present the problems experienced by the rest of the nation. I.E., I think it we cannot assume that Alexandria is necessarily different and that having SROs in schools long term may not present systematic racism issues. On the flip side, the immediate safety concerns are valid so there is merit for some kind of immediate call to action. I listened to most of this week’s City Council meeting and I actually think the worst part of it was Wilson’s rant that it was a waste of time and unprofessional. We cannot assume Hutchings’ recommendation was right and in light of the importance of the issues involved, why wasn’t it appropriate to put the school administrators under scrutiny when there were asking for renewal of the SRO program. |
This 1,000%. |
Imagine being a white, UMC, intact, educated family that just moved here, from, say, Ames, Iowa. And this is the only school in town. How incredibly depressing. |
It's depressing for everyone. You'd think such a ridiculously expensive city would have good schools. |
Not really. All the problem students don't pay for anything. The rest of the city carries them like dead weight. And the thanks we get are shootings and brawls. Move the public housing out of the city NOW! |
I think that's illegal. |
Do you know me? |
Agreed. Ultimately, this is where they lost me. The school is too big. Period. |
Unfortunately you are correct |
Right, and school enrollment projections continue to grow yet we can never think about, consider, or discuss a second high school. One single school busting at the seams and overcrowded for ever. Enrollment is already the size of a small college and clearly that’s too much to manage. Time to start pushing again for a second school once the new ACPS board is in office. |
How did this thread go over the weekend without a single mention of the threat that closed both AC and MH?
Is it just a coincidece that the first day after SROs were voted to return, a credible threat was called in? |
