Honestly I'm incredibly frustrated by the dialogue about this situation, especially on the ACPS Facebook group. People tear down every suggestion. SROs are racist. Metal detectors are racist. Building another high school is racist. Being worried about the violence and wanting to do something about it is racist/white panic. I give up. I'm a Democrat but this is just too much for me.
I feel you. It’s like nobody really wants solutions and we are stuck on this treadmill of no action being taken. One lady came up with every explantation and excuse possible for why we could never ever have a second high school. How is it every other jurisdiction manages more than one high school but it’s an apparent impossibility in Alexandria? This is something else.
I am not part of the Facebook group anymore but I think that a lot of the problem is unwillingness to acknowledge the validity of portions of the views of the opposing positions and some assumptions that somehow Alexandria is unique and does not potentially present the problems experienced by the rest of the nation. I.E., I think it we cannot assume that Alexandria is necessarily different and that having SROs in schools long term may not present systematic racism issues. On the flip side, the immediate safety concerns are valid so there is merit for some kind of immediate call to action. I listened to most of this week’s City Council meeting and I actually think the worst part of it was Wilson’s rant that it was a waste of time and unprofessional. We cannot assume Hutchings’ recommendation was right and in light of the importance of the issues involved, why wasn’t it appropriate to put the school administrators under scrutiny when there were asking for renewal of the SRO program.
