What an absolute shitshow. Insane that you people tolerate this.

+1 My daughter has been having a lot of health problems this year so we decided to homeschool for K. Which was the right choice because she probably would have missed half the school year so far. I worked as an early elementary teacher before staying home with her and it's been going really well. ACPS is clearly becoming a trainwreck so while we'll reevaluate every year (which is why I keep track of what's going on in ACPS), at this point I don't see us switching to public unless we move.

If they're fighting off-campus, they're no longer the responsibility of the school. Schools don't parent kids after-hours. And I'm not sure why another poster needs to speculate about the races involved when no news source has stated these "facts."

Someone I know was there and saw what happened, so the races of the people are known; however I don't think it's relevant.

It's really depressing.

Yeah because that’s the important issue here - to be as woke as possible while ignoring real issues. 😞

The video of the McDonalds fight from earlier this week has been posted on the GW fight insta account. Our society (both adults and children) is broken. Neither side is right here but violence cannot be the answer. The video doesn’t show what happened to begin the fight and the adult should have simply walked away and left before it escalated, because he’s the adult. However, the violence cannot be justified whatsoever. Multiple people hitting, stomping on his head, kicking and throwing chairs on him. Chair flying through the inside of Bradlee McDonalds. I can’t imagine having to work there.

It’s awful.

All of you should go watch the attack. Go to Instagram and search GWMSfights2022. It's the first video.

Everything that is wrong with the world can be found in that video. Just imagine for a moment if the races were reversed. Just imagine if it were agroup of white boys stomping on an old back man's head.

Statistically speaking, half of the boys in the video will be dead or in jail in the next 3 years. So, on the bright side, the situation is somewhat self resolving.

We can't force people to make good choices. It doesn't seem like there's much that can be done to effectively help kids with uninvolved or otherwise bad parents. :/

+1 I don't know if it's so they feel better about sending their kids to ACPS or what. But this is absolutely not normal or acceptable. If we ever decide to use public schools instead of homeschooling, we're definitely going to move out of Alexandria City. I don't remember ever seeing any fights at my high school. I understand a few one on one fights like you had at your school, but the situation at ACHS and GW is absolutely out of control.

Absolutely agree. ACHS was known for fights in the 90s-00s when I was in another NoVa school district. Occasional fights occurred in our school, but never was there a gun or shooting anywhere near campus, and fights were absolutely not a daily, or even monthly occurrence.

I am floored by some Alex city residents' level of risk tolerance when it comes to school fights. It's not acceptable for a child to just put their head down and "stay out of it." Repeated exposure to violence is obviously not great for the developing brain, sense of safety or self esteem.

Don't forget the in-school daycare.

In-school daycares allow teen moms to complete their education. Don't even try to knock that. It puts the blame squarely on the female for "getting" pregnant. Not everyone has access to birth control and we know there are many social and structural factors that contribute to teen pregnancy.

agreed, no teen girl is having a baby while in high school because her high school has a daycare. But having that daycare keeps the mother in school and hopefully more likely to graduate. I am 100% for it, although it does make me sad they are needed.

+1 Am I just supposed to send my kid into a warzone and pray none of these bad apples notice her?
