I have noticed that when I call the random trolling I've seen out, they suddenly stop posting for awhile. So likely yeah, a rando from some other state who just likes to troll or else the GOP is paying for astroturfing (which I believe they would)
BUT BUT BUT some jerkoff said Dump's police state is successfully lowering violent crime! Say it ain't so!

On August 11 there were 100 murders in 2025. As of September 2 there were 104. That’s an objectively big difference in the murder rate.

Exactly. Can’t argue with positive results.

Was downtown at Nationals game and no gang bangers in site, but saw NG 5 times, with weapons, and they were really nice, smiled and said hello. They seemed to be having a good time also.

If you think that is some kind of hard data you’re a big idiot. NG is patrolling safe areas to make a show of force that Trump controls us. It is disgusting and I feel violated and angry every time I see their ugly camo and absurd body armor.

Hard data is that there have been 4 murders since August 12, when the NG came in, in a city that was averaging more than 14 murders per month this year.

What hard data do you have?

I know enough to know that one month isn’t a good comparator.

How about 4 more months until the end of the year? If there are 4-8 murders a month instead of the 14/month we had from January to July will you admit it works? How long do you need?

DP butting in. Even if it works, how is it sustainable? Deploying the NG in DC costs $1 million a day. If they are the answer to DC‘s crime problems, please explain how their presence is sustainable.

The NYPD budget is almost $6 billion a year.

https://council.nyc.gov/budget/wp-content/uploads/sites/54/2024/03/056-NYPD.pdf

MPD’s budget for 2025 was more than $630 million.

https://cfo.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/ocfo/publication/attachments/fa0_mpd_chapter_2025j.pdf

$1 million a day ($365 million) extra to cut the murder rate by half to three times less and have something approaching NYC’s murder rate is not a bad deal.

Maybe take into account the population of all of NYC vs the population of DC.

Yes, but the point is that DC already spends $630 million for MPD. What do they have to show for it?

There were 187 murders in DC 2024. There were 382 in NYC in 2024.

So while DC spends as much per capita as NYC on policing they have horrible results by comparison. During this Fed surge there have been 4 murders in 23 days. That’s around 5 murders a month. If you expand those kind of numbers to the entire year that’s 60 murders a year, which would be the lowest murder rate in DC in recorded history.

$365 million to save 125+ lives and have the lowest murder rate in recorded history in the nation’s capital is not a bad return on investment. The federal government spends billions on far less worthy causes.

Much of DC's issues are on the prosecution side: DC prosecutes and no papers at a much lower rate than NYC. Feds are not even getting more arrests than MPD. If you are a DC local, you know this. If you are one of the rando MAGAs who post here from other states (caught one idiot doxxing himself the other day), you do not understand that and the nuances.

Fix prosecution and save lots of money. I am happy that the admin is starting to address that part which is all they needed to do in the first place. Arrests do not matter one iota without fixing prosecution issues and on the back end, some of these arrested folks are being let go due to violation of search and seizure laws.

You can’t prosecute murders that do not happen. I’d rather have hundreds more people not die a year and LESS crime than have more murders and more crime but prosecute the perpetrators more efficiently and effectively.

The Fed surge is keeping murders from happening. The MPD updated there stats today and it is still 104 murders as of September 4. That is 4 murders between August 12 and September 4 in a city that was averaging 14 murders a month before the Feds came in. Those murder numbers are real and cannot be fudged. I’m not judging the change in crime based on every other crime stat that has been shown to be manipulated or underreported for political reasons in DC and other cities around the country in the past as well. Murder stats are the only thing people should put any faith in.

The show of force has more to do with fear of prosecution (to quote DC criminals, they historically avoided VA because "VA don't play" when it comes to crime). So staff up MPD and USAO.

But I do not want military presence for law enforcement as a permanent solution to crime. Slippery slope and quite expensive plus is off putting to our restaurant and tourism industries. Messy fed intervention harassing folks (like what happened at Coolidge HS this week causing utter chaos and more distrust of the feds) is not ideal. Also we have achieved a low murder rate in prior years just with basic policing and prosecution. I don't know why you favor expensive, short term solutions over efficient sustainable ones.

DP to add, do you even live here? There are random MAGAs from other states trolling and astroturfing this forum. I don't go on Memphis forums to tell them what their city needs. It is bizarre.

They have no purpose if they aren’t “sticking it to the libs.” It’s a sad life for them, but I just count myself lucky to not be one of them. Can you imagine? You have all three branches of government and you are still having tantrums?

It would be better if we can figure out a way to peacefully divorce ourselves from the red states.

Los Angeles recently won a court case over National Guard deployment there, after the fact.

Yup. This is mentioned in the article.

The suit also makes an argument similar to the one the judge in California based his ruling on: that the deployment of National Guard troops in the city runs “roughshod over a fundamental tenet of American democracy — that the military should not be involved in domestic law enforcement.”

Mr. Trump had made clear that such a role was his intention, saying on Aug. 11 that he was calling out the Guard to “reestablish law, order and public safety” in the city. Since then, even as federal law enforcement officers have been involved in hundreds of arrests and immigration agents have been detaining hundreds of Washington residents deemed to be in the country illegally, the National Guard troops have been posted at Metro stations and around city landmarks. Some soldiers have been seen picking up trash.

They can never answer this one. And they want to expand this price tag to other cities.

Waiting periods for gun purchases alone can drop gun deaths by 17%. Coupled with other laws used by other states, even more.

But somehow they are not willing to 'pay' that price no matter how many people and children it saves.

DC has some of the strictest gun laws in the US. 10 day waiting period. They actually tried to ban handguns in 2007 and a federal court overruled it. We still have a semiautomatic and assault style weapons ban.

Doesn’t make a difference because surprise surprise criminals aren’t legally purchasing firearms, they’re either purchased illegally or they use the ghost gun kits

They go to more permissive states to buy guns.

DC doesn't prosecute gun crimes. You can have the toughest laws in the nation, but if prosecutors aren't prosecuting and judges aren't judging, the laws are worthless.

So, why haven’t the Feds done better by DC? In DC, aren’t the judges and the prosecutors all Federal positions?
Sorting that out doesn’t have the same cachet as bringing in the military to harass the imagined hell hole, I guess.

I have read some things that they are staffing up USAO. I hate Trump, but would admit this is a good thing along with better prosecution for violent offenses. But the military occupation just looks like q waste, honestly and it is not a realistic, sustainable solution. Criminals are holding back most likely because of fearing DC is no longer playing on the prosecution end, so shootings are lower in high crime areas like SE and NE. Not because of rando National Guard picking up trash on the mall.

These are not particularly impressive numbers given the amount of national guard members that have been stationed to DC. So many of them have been asked to do stuff like pick up trash and stand watch at low-crime metro stations. Trump is not being efficient in how he uses the Natl Guard

+1

It is actually embarrassing when you subtract the ICE arrests out, it is typical for DC. Btw, MS-13/TDA gangs are not the cause of shootings in DC, maybe the burbs.(And who knows how they are identifying them?)

The only thing that has been working to stop crime in DC with this whole mess is the impression that DC will finally actually prosecute when folks are caught!

Otherwise, no, National Guard picking up trash in NW were not the cause of lower shootings in higher crime Wards 7 and 8 where Guard never went other than a photo op.

Yup, any they are starting to have morale problems.

I actually feel bad for the guard members involved in this debacle. They are away from their jobs and families for Trump theater. I can't imagine it's very long before some of them start speaking about that publicly.

Actually, impressive since most criminals are laying low. Many of these arrests are from execution of warrants. Cops going into dangerous situations. Bravo.
