| I just saw someone post about LAMB opening a campus in Brookland. Does anyone know anything more about this? |
|
1600 Taylor Street NE
Washington, DC 20017-3035 ALTA used this space last year. It is the church on the corner of Taylor and South Dakota. (right past Michigan) On the same block as Bunker Hill ES. It's actually diagonal from Bunkerhill. |
| That is the Church that Potomac Lighthouse started in. |
| I'm pretty sure it's not permanent. They're planning to move to Walter Reed at some point in the next few years. |
| I heard the same at an openhouse. Eventually moving to Walter Reed. |
| Does anyone know when a decision will be made about the Brookland campus? |
|
Bumping this up to see if anyone has more info regarding the satellite campus.
I drove by this weekend to see what it looks like...smallish playground and nice green lawn area that I wonder if the kids will be able to run around? Does anyone know if they are going to make tours of the new facility available? Will they be hiring all new staff for the new campus? What grades will be housed there? |
I spoke with the assistant principal a few weeks ago. At that time I was told that only 3s and 4s will be at the Brookland campus next year. There will be a large indoor space available for when there is bad weather. The Principal who helped start the school will be at the expansion site next year b/c she lived through it a few years ago and knows what worked and what did not. |
| an interesting dynamic will develop as younger siblings will be in the current permanent location (allowing the family to have one drop/pickup), and newly entering families (presumably oldest children) will be at the new location. Harder to establish a school culture with no younger siblings / already involved parents in a classroom. |

Another interesting twist is that the 3/4s at the brookland site will be 100% immersion in Spanish, so no English in the afternoon or every other day or other models where English is included some of the time. I wonder how many parents will be surprised at this? It was definitely spelled out in the open houses but parents might not have caught on.
I think it will work fine as a model, since the kids will still be working on literacy, but in Spanish. I think Lamb now has enough experience to know that the reading skills transfer over to the other language very quickly (which I assume will happen in K). These kids will really have a good grasp of the language by K if they are not already fluent. |
I will be one of those new families at the Brookland campus, with my oldest being a new student there. You are right that the dynamics will be different and the school culture will take time to develop, but from my interactions with the other new parents that I met at LAMB's parent education conference last weekend, I am not worried about parental involvement. We are all thrilled to have this opportunity and plan on being very involved. I am looking forward to starting our own little campus with this new group of parents. |
I wasn't aware that the new campus would be full immersion. This didn't come up in the parent workshop a couple weekends ago. Are you sure this decision has been finalized? They made it sound as if students would be engaging in English for half of the day. I don't think all new parents are aware if this is the case. |
| Full immersion is the way to go when children are 3 and 4 years old. |
I think WIS has full immersion from PS3-K, with dual language starting in 1st grade-- |
| At the Info Session I went to they explained that 3s and 4s did full immersion. Don't think this is a change in their model. They mentioned introducing English literacy in K during the younger ones' naps. |
