Please spare us from more of the condescending “we always know best” nonsense that have been destroying FCPS (and in particular TJ). You have no idea how much local parents hate your ilk.

We've seen TJ go from a place that most kids loved and wanted to stay attached (pre-2010) to to a place that most kids hated and want nothing to do with after graduating (post-2010). You can hardly fault us for wanting better for the students who attend.

Okay, show us the evidence of your claim, not just out of your racist ass.

Everyone says on these boards how toxic it had become. Sure, the recent changes help a little but it really isn't the same.

Completely agree. Something needs to be done. Last year's changes may help a little but they need to take it further.

The BS from so many people that don't have any real connection to TJ is stupid. The kids who don't like it, are being typical kids. Many high school kids do not like their high schools. Kids are somewhat lazy and hate having to work sometimes. It is part of being a teenager. At the end of the day, the TJ kids are getting an excellent education and I hope that other kids can have a similar experience.

It used to be a lot better. I hope they can save TJ.

It's watered down. Whether or not that is a good thing is a point of debate. There are pros and cons to it, and there are people in each camp.

Many of the kids who present gifted because of their time in cram school can't really do the work so they've had to dumb things down over the past decade. However, I think the latest changes that emphasize talent over prep may help restore TJ to its older state.

This.

One thing that I found fascinating is that the cram/prep schools continue while they are at TJ. Some students “pre-take” classes during the summer. One place also provides a binder of prior tests/problems sets.

Parent of TJ kid.
These are fair comments. The thing I will say is that some TJ teachers teach and help when kids have questions, others TJ teachers do NOT teach and refuse to help. These non-teaching TJ teachers get spoiled as TJ kids want to do well and go into stem, so……if your poor kid got one of the bad ones, the kid has to find someone on the outside to help.
Sorry. It’s true.
The in coming 9th grade presentation when they say “oh we will always get help for your kid”….yeah, no. Dice roll.

Your racism is showing. Graduates love TJ post 2010 just as much. You just don't like the racial makeup.

Your ignorance is showing. It's not even comparable.

+1. There are some bad teachers there. Seem to take joy in seeing their students struggle.

What?!? I don't understand how being a FARMS kid and getting an edge on admissions is "talent over prep."

The old system seem to favor kids who went to cram schools to make them appear gifted when they were really mediocre. The new system tries to identify outliers who are gifted not just did from wealthy areas who went to cram school. Overall the talent and aptitude is much higher with this new crop of students.

Please explain specifically how the new system is identifying gifted kids, as this is a pretty fluffy statement without any actual evidence.

And explain your conclusion that "the talent and aptitude is much higher with this new crop of students." I have heard the exact opposite. Clearly, you do not, nor no anyone, that teaches there.

Just some quick stats from publicly available data from the AMC 10 results of "9th" graders from last year (class of 2024) and this year (class of 2025 - Holistic review process) of TJHSST and local NOVA schools

Honors roll of TJHSST reduced from 85% to 60 %
Honors roll of Other schools increased from 15 to 40%

Distinguished honor roll for TJHSST reduced from 100% to 0%
Distinguished honor roll for Other schools increased from 0 to 100%

Maybe the kids good in Math are not good in all areas identified by the Holistic Approach.

It may be difficult to find public data for Science Olympiads etc. as they are not published like AMC scores.

No one cares about AMC scores. Students have been cheating on these tests.

You were heard saying last November that no one cares about election results either. You don’t care and that is ok. Others care.
