I kind of like "home maker" in lieu of SAHM. Anyone else?

Just reading the thread on taxes and I wish that term would come back. It's like being a SAHM is so offensive for some reason that every term used to describe it eventually becomes derogatory.

Home maker seems more positive and accurate then SAHM. Not to be cheesy, but I feel like I make my house a really nice place to be by virtue of having the extra time to do things that I couldn't do if I worked. I guess the only drawback is some working moms thinking that it infers that they don't make their house a home with the things they do for their family (not what I think btw). Such is life I guess.

I too prefer that word and I actually use it in conversation to describe myself.

Personally, I'm partial to "Domestic Goddess"

lol.

13:59 Ew, just makes me think of Roseanne. And trivializes the job to boot.

How does that trivialize it exactly?

because "goddess" is tongue in cheek and in the same camp as "princess" and "grrrrrrlz"

If my coworker and I spend our days writing briefs to submit to the 5th circuit court of appeals, after our stint at prestigious clerkships, we wouldn't be referred to as "appellate grrrrrrrlz." a female cardio thoracic surgeon isn't a "Heart Goddess."

because it's silly. It's a good, serious endeavor that deserves a respectful title. Don't you agree?

Why does it need a title? Seems ironic since many SAHMs on this board say they don't need a title/job etc. to identify themselves. Outside of the IRS and an easy way to ID yourself on a forum such as this, why do you need a title?

When I stayed home I said, "I'm staying home now" in conversation rather than give myself a title. And now that I work, I rarely give my title: "I'm Director of Blank." I usually say - "I work on Blank initiatives/issues" whatever Or, I work in blank field. My title is on my business card and email signature but I rarely going around calling myself that.

You don't sound like you are familiar with the source of this particular nomenclature. The Guerrilla Grrrrlz (sp?) were radical feminist performance artists, and I assure you, there was nothing shrinking about them. They were pretty fierce and in-you-face and had a good sense of humor, to boot. So I think "Appellate Grrrrlz" is actually pretty appropriate.

Regarding SAHM vs. homemaker: I prefer Home Czar.

because "I'm staying home now" is pretty inaccurate and vague. I might say the same if I had, say a severe head injury.

You might say you work in banking and it too is pretty vague. You could be a teller or an investment banker. My guess is you say, I work in X field because people automatically know what it means.

Some people want to convey what they actually do with a few concise words. Don't imply that wanting a title means we want to be taken seriously, which also implies that you think we shouldn't be. You aren't a subtle as you think.

LOL! Love home czar and think PP quoted above needs to get over herself quick.

I'm a "work at home mom" but I prefer to refer to myself as "airline person" on these boards. And at home, I like to be called "boss."

I remember you "airline person"! How's it going?
