I kind of like "home maker" in lieu of SAHM. Anyone else?

You might say you work in banking and it too is pretty vague. You could be a teller or an investment banker. My guess is you say, I work in X field because people automatically know what it means.

Some people want to convey what they actually do with a few concise words. Don't imply that wanting a title means we want to be taken seriously, which also implies that you think we shouldn't be. You aren't a subtle as you think.

Oh please. It's an anonymous forum. If I wanted to bash SAHMs I would. But please, continue this debate and maybe we can have another thread like the many Mommy Card threads. Those were compelling and rich, and I'm sure we all learned a lot.

Swimmingly!

Are you a former colleague who departed to become a domestic goddess / home czar / SAHM ?

If so, I miss you in the industry! And am still a little bit envious!

Excellent. Love your insightful comments.

Home maker sounds silly, like there is some big oven and in it are homes.... Why did house wife go out of style? Maybe House Queen.

I think housewife went out of style because it emphasizes the house and wife aspect, and was maybe more encompassing of women who quit work once they were married. Nowadays, SAHM puts the emphasis on the kids, because most SAHMs quit work when they have a child, and they are quitting because of the child, not because they are a wife.

Homemaker would work too, but again, my theory is that SAHM is the popular term because it more accurately describes what is going on.

I like the term CFO. Chief Family Officer. This term can be used by all types of moms, including but not limited to; those that get paid, and those that don't. Because as we all know, it doesn't matter how much mulaa you make, you will be responsible for the vast majority of planning and implementation of all things family. IMHO and experience.

A mother of a friend of mine called herself a homemaker, not a housewife - in her words "i make a home for my family, I am not married to my house".
I love the term homemaker and it makes me think of her!

My DH refers to me as the family CEO.

I call myself the stay home parent.

Domestic Engineer here, but I may promote myself to Home Czarina.

I don't like "homemaker" because when I was working, I was still also the lead parent responsible for all things domestic. OTOH, "SAHM" makes it sound like now I've got my feet up on the couch, sitting around and taking it easy. I wish!

I think it's interesting that most of the suggestions are titles which are almost laughably important tag ons to home work: Czar, Goddess, Chief Officer...

I'm a senior financial analyst. When I introduce myself, I just say financial analyst. If I stayed home, I'd either say I stay home with the kids or I'm a homemaker. Why the need to elevate the choice to something almost confrontational? I realize most of you wouldn't INTRODUCE yourself that way, but where is the humility here? All of us make choices we think are right for our families.
