I doubt the whole Oak Hill would go to KAA. But maybe Emerald Chase goes to South Lakes and the rest of Oak Hill go to KAA.

Remember currently Emerald Chase kids (and Bradley Farm kids south of West Ox) go to Westfield. Moving them to KAA won’t give relief to Chantilly.

I don't take it for granted that Thru and the school board will do what makes sense, but what makes sense is to send Emerald Chase to KAA with the rest of Oak Hill in order to keep pyramids aligned (and, assuming the Franklin Middle School kids get redistricted for Carson, to eliminate a split feeder).

I agree. The school board has an opportunity to build an actual school pyramid with no split feeders with just making a few changes. I hope they don’t find a way to screw that up.

Thru basically gave Emerald Chase two choices: merge with Fox Mill and go to SLHS with other Fox Mill kids (no split feeder scenario 3) or stay with Oak Hill and split at MS/HS level (scenario 4).

I get that Emerald Chase parents may want to avoid SLHS but KAA can take only 2000 kids and Chantilly needs relief.

Emerald Chase parents have been very vocal about what they want. But it’s not like the school board and Thru ignored their original complaints.

I don't live in Emerald Chase, but nearby. I think they sincerely hate the split feeder thing. It seems that any time people object to going to a different school that people assume it is because it is a less desirable school.

I will remind you that during the South Lakes boundary study that Chantilly neighborhoods fought against one another to stay at Chantilly over Oakton--which, at the time, was considered a much more "desirable" school.

Then they can go with Scenario 3. No split feeding under Scenario 3.

But they lobbied hard against Scenario 3 to stay with Oak Hill. Now their wish is granted under Scenario 4. Are they going to complain about split feeding this time?

To be clear FCPS is not creating a new split feeding pattern here. Emerald Chase kids are currenlty going to Westfield, while the most Oak Hill kids are going to Chantilly.

Doubt those Oak Hill kids stay at Chantilly with the opening of KAA. Will be interesting to see what happens with those maps, as Dr. Reid indicated last night there will be changes at the MS and HS level which will be "feathered" into the Scenario 4 map. So basically buckle in.

Non Emerald Chase Oak Hill kids will likely get moved from Chantilly as Chantilly needs some relief.

I thought about this, and Oak Hill doesn’t necessarily need to move.

While Chantilly certainly needs relief, if Floris, McNair, and Coates are moved from Westfield to KAA, Westfield’s enrollment will drop so significantly (by about 1,000 or more students) that the county will likely need to move students from Chantilly to Westfield. For example, Brookfield could go to Westfield.

A lot of passionate conversation to be had there... And I want to hear what other people around the county are thinking about the new scenario!

The “passionate conversation” is a very small group of Lewis parents desperately wanting more middle and upper middle income neighborhoods to be rezoned to Lewis so they can feel better about themselves and their poor real estate selection decisions.

Not a Lewis parent here but someone who sees that these moves are destroying any hope of a good experience for Lewis students because of undersized classrooms and not enough of a cohort to populate extracurriculars. Would you prefer that they closed Lewis and sent the students to WSHS and LBSS? Or would you complain that that would dilute your precious schools?

This is preposterous. Oak Hill is the only school that doesn't have some walkers going to Chantilly. They aren't going to put walkers to Chantilly on a bus to Westfield in this budget crunch environment, nor would they make new split feeders when they can just change the existing bus routes for Oak Hill.

At the meeting t she did mention the maps for the new school will be available at the open house on 10/25. She talked about how much Chantilly needed relief and that Carson is next door and will go to the new school most likely.

DP and +1. I actually think they should close Lewis or turn it into a standalone ED center since the CSS model isn't working. Send the current students to WSHS and LBSS.

Oak Hill is right next to KAA though and more than half of it goes to Chantilly.

I'm guessing she didn't say a single thing about the long bus ride to Oakton, though. She's walked that back.

Anonymous wrote:Yes listened to the meeting. Dr. Reid stated they didn’t want to do too much this round so they focused on overcrowded schools. Which does not make sense. We have spent a lot on the review, they should have just done the overly crowded schools and not call it a comprehensive review.

She should have said:

* We focused on attendance islands and split feeders unless there was opposition, in which case we folded; and

* We focused on overcrowded schools, although in some cases we've made the overcrowding worse for now but that could change with KAA proposals.

For your first bullet, you meant:

* We focused on attendance islands and split feeders unless there was opposition, in which case we listened to our constituents who opposed moving their kids for no good reason.

+1 👏

So only people who buy in the 'right' places in Fairfax County are entitled to a good education? You sound like a swell person.

Despite the fact that the last few times FCPS rezoned Lee/Lewis houses they took out large numbers of wealthier homes and moved them to West Springfield.

Despite the fact that FCPS sticks with an underperforming IB program and has reduced language choices - encouraging people to flee through pupil placements.

Despite the fact that some people have owned their home for many years. Are they just supposed to say "This is all OK. I am fine with being screwed."?

Honestly, this county seems to attract some real as(&^oles.

What kind of presentation/documents are they providing at each community meeting? Are they taking feedback or questions?

Are the new maps out yet?

Probably not LBSS. Edison, Hayfield, Annandale, South County and WSHS could easily absorb the 2-300 each with some reshuffling

How do you propose fixing Lee? What’s the timeline to that fix?

Please don’t include adding students from neighboring schools, they won’t go. The school needs to be fixed (or closed).

THIS.
Some people bought in the area before Lewis started it's decline. There are NO EFFORTS to do anything about it, and that's become abundantly clear with scenario 4.

And to be clear, I'm not advocating to move other families in without addressing root problems. But, moving some families out is REALLY saying the quiet part out loud.
