This is horrifying yet likely true. The whole thread is eye-opening and depressing.

Ugh, this sickens me.

What was deleted?
.

Becky Tuch had a tweet about how there are people who will (in effect) harm her writing career because Becky is apologizing and also breaking ranks. Then she deleted it.

Same here.

Anonymous wrote:PP here. I meant to add that the unique thing about the this is that we can all see the distortion by Kolker and the NYT up front, because of the court case. Normally we don't get that opportunity to independently fact check the NYT, but here, unusually, we do. And what happens, the one time we can fact check a piece of investigative journalism? We see just how overtly misogynist the NYT is. We see the classism. We see the institutional pass that the NYT gives other institutions with power. Why did Kolker, an investigative journalist, never once ask GrubStreet who handled Dorland's complaint? Why, with all the evidence of institutional failure, did Kolker turn this into a misogynist cat fight article, in the process smearing the reputation of at least one person who didn't deserve it?

And that is what is unusual here, because it raises questions about what happens when we can't fact check ourselves. What else does the NYT distort? What else can't we trust?

YES — YES — YES.

+2. If you watch 15 Minutes of Shame on Netflix there is a guy at the beginning who says the times totally misrepresented him and ruined his life. They deny it but after this I am not inclined to believe them at all. This is a very very big deal.

the NYTimes is just people. I know Times reporters and have been quoted by the times. All they care about is stories. WSJ has more integrity IMO.

Unfortunately I do not believe the WSJ has more integrity. Ever since Rupert Murdoch bought it it has become more and more slanted. I used to read it and then I Had to stop because I knew some facts behind some things that were written about and I saw how they were misrepresented in the WSJ. That’s another News source that Rupert Murdoch destroyed

The NYT still has enough interesting articles to keep me subscribing, but I've been disillusioned about their objectivity since the Bush/Gore election fiasco and the lead-up to the Forever Wars in the following years. (Basically my whole adult life, or as long as I have been paying attention.)

I really need to find a way to get away from this story. It’s triggering memories of being iced out by gossipy colleagues and ostracized for having a different personality/background. I’ve personalized this story so much and am experiencing a return of those old feelings of powerlessness and worthlessness. I actually think I might need to go back to therapy over this.

People are cruel.

The fact that the NYT is censoring comments critical of the paper and/or their editors is disturbing. Do they pick and choose comments on all articles to create/curate "public opinion"? It appears they do and this surprises me.

My comment had nothing offensive, profane or personal in it, it was a rather understated opinion and set of questions asking why the court documents and timeline were not addressed in either the first story or the follow up. I also pointed out that the tone of the follow up was condescending to readers, talking about readers' "emotions".

I'm taking a creative writing class right now through an institution like GrubStreet and I find I am wondering who the instructors are mocking outside of class.

Yes, it is disturbing. They are not posting any comments about any culpability the NYT itself may have.

And what is more disturbing, Celeste Ng and the in-group are pretending this didn't happen and they won't have consequences. It is going to be swept under the rug.

Perhaps Dorland will write a memoir. I would read it.
