Protests on college campuses

The difference is that there was widespread popular support for the Civil Rights protestors. Here, there isn’t. That means that the protestors are largely bored and spoiled kids, because the adults who have a lot to actually lose aren’t joining in. The Civil War protests were made powerful by people who had a lot to lose, and so who acted with dignity, strength, and grace. These are just entitled brats.

However, the protestors have inadvertently caused what is arguably the best GoFundMe description in history. I will give them that.

That's funny. A nice moment of levity.

How difficult is that?

I’m in the “the US should cut funding, at least most of it, to Israel and wash our hands of this mess” camp and yet the idea of universities divesting because a bunch of wealthy brats had an ongoing temper tantrum makes me want to have the universities invest more, not less. Plus, Israel produces a lot of good stuff.

I do not like the idea of these larping entitled kids dictating any sort of investment policy.

I agree but feel the same way about the wealthy donors having a temper tantrum because students dared to complain about the Israeli Government. They all suck and they are all harming us. Send Bibi and Sinwar to the Hague. They can share the same cell for all I care.

Bad faith view of what the donors were reacting to.

Not at all. The bad faith is pretending that criticism of Israel is anti-Semitic. We are all sick of the bs, both yours and theirs.

Some is, some isn’t. But those donors were reacting to reports of anti Semitism, not about “students who dare complain about a foreign government.” Suggesting the latter is disingenuous whether you agree with those reports or you don’t.

Even if a college divests, nothing changes. Like, literally nothing.

Protest peacefully in Washington. Lobby your reps on the Hill.

If you just want to cosplay “activist” on your parent’s dime instead of studying for exams, then do it in DC. At least it will be somewhat effective.

100%. And the thuggish, bullying tactics of the pro-Palestine protestors means they will never be able rally a peaceful protest in DC.

The difference is Israel support is all astroturf. The similarities are the same people who are against civil rights are pro Israel

You are so ignorant it isn't even close to funny.

Do you know who's been on the side of civil rights all this time? Jews. We have been there marching, donating, voting, working, all of it. It is one of the reasons that seeing the pro-Gaza protestors say such despicable, hateful things feels like such a betrayal now.

None of you are advocating for peace. You don't even want peace. You want to be the bloody victors of a horrible war. You're disgusting, immoral, history-blind people.

Reports of anti-Semitism by organizations that claim that criticism of Israel is anti-Semitic. It's all circular.

No. There ARE people advocating for peace including a few posters on here. You just have not encountered them.

Plenty of Jews advocating for peace and anti-genocide, you just won’t find them on DCUM. This place is crawling with Zionists.

These despicable threads are populated by people who have repeatedly called for the destruction of Israel, over and over - while using the word "zionist" as an epithet against anyone who does not agree. That is not peace. Calling for "intifada everywhere" is not peace.

If I haven't encountered those who want actual peace, it's because they are such a minority that they are drowned out by the loudest, most disgusting voices here. The people who demanded a ceasefire on October 8 are not interested in peace.

There’s a crazy pro-Hamas (or Hamas) poster on here who responds to every post with insults. Just best to ignore them.

No, not really. I mean in your head that might be true, but neither polls nor the reality on the ground show that.

There was massive public support for the Civil War protestors. Average people were out, protesting peacefully, supporting the marchers, etc. None of that is here. The protestors are isolated and unpopular.

And what about pro-Israel protestors? Can they protest in DC or the thuggish, bullying tactics they displayed last night when a mob of hundreds dressed in black and wearing white masks attacked the pro-Palestinian encampment at UCLA disqualify them? I guess that’s not a big deal right? According to the Guardian and LA Times they attacked shouting that this was a second Nabka. Any outrage from the big Jewish donors? None?
