now it makes up 73% of all new cases

are we this bad at tracking it???

Yes. We’ve been doing far less sequencing that most European countries, or places like Israel and South Africa. I think we’ve stepped it up in recent weeks, but having stuff decentralized means many states don’t have the resources to sustain that pace.

Well, the next variant will be PI. It is going to be even more transmissible. When will this end?

It has to end by Omega, right?

It is up to the virus. If omicron is superseded by PI, then PI has to be more transmissible.

What happened to the big Epsilon wave, then? The great Theta crisis? There were plenty of variants between Delta and Omicron that just kind of fizzled out before they caused spikes in cases or hospitalizations.

Variants are popping up all over the world. Some don’t replicate successfully enough to become dominant in a population, or spread to other areas in any meaningful way. It’s not a sequential thing, variants can exist side by side in a population, as Delta and Omicron are currently doing in many places. The mutations can happen any time, anywhere, and they aren’t always an “improvement” (from the virus’s point of view) on the other strains.

From the link:

During a virtual media briefing Monday, local officials stressed their commitment to keeping Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) open for in-person learning. But they added they will consider closing individual schools if a school meets certain criteria for COVID-19 outbreak.

MCPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight said , “There is no plan to close all MCPS schools’ because I want to be very clear about that.”

She explained the criteria – once students return to school in the new year, if at least 5% of unrelated students and staff test positive for COVID-19 within a 14-day period, with a minimum of 10 people testing positive, then county Health and Human Services and MCPS will work together to determine if that particular school should close for 14 days and revert to virtual learning.

The issue is that there won't be enough tests, and in the chaos, positives will not be reported accurately (you may have heard that since the beginning of the school year, a lot of positives that parents know about do not appear on the MCPS Covid tracker).
So the real Covid incidence will be much higher than the numbers will show, whether schools close or not.

For anyone wondering what to use after the Greek alphabet, we have a host of ancient dead languages we can use!

No way. I think WHO will simply use omega 1, omega 2, etc.

OK. It closes when we can call it "Montgomery Covid Public Schools".

An individual school will close for 14 days once 5% of the school is positive for COVID in a 14 day period.

after the 14 days... since the virus is still spreading in the community ... kids will still have COVID. So they come back for 3-4 days, and then the school switches to virtual again? You realize that is what is going to logically happen.

I'm not saying we shouldn't try the school by school approach, just be prepared that it isn't going to work AT ALL so you aren't suprised.

Don’t be surprised that Omicron burns through exceedingly fast and it works really well.
