When APS needs a police officer at public meetings something is wrong with these people. When they just throw bad data against the wall to see what sticks....can we post actual names here? |
It's not a winner in the DCUM sense but it is separate from boundary speculations because APS is clearly and overtly saying that this is not a boundary process, just a school move. So it gets its own thread. Also, anybody know what's new? |
Nothing is new. Feb 6 is in 3 days- then there will be news. |
A draft PPT is up for Thursday: https://go.boarddocs.com/vsba/arlington/Board.nsf/files/BLCNJ95FD797/$file/F-2%20Action%20Item%20-%20Elementary%20School%20Planning%20Presentation.pdf There's nothing new in it, though. |
I’m a parent at one of the affected schools and I initially was involved because of course I want to stay in the loop on what’s happening. Unfortunately, I’ve seen the level of entitlement and hysteria has gone off the rails. From someone comparing the move of a few option elementary schools to a genocidal regime (seriously, you can’t make this stuff up) to the last-minute antics, I’m saddened that parents I smile at in the halls are really like this. I don’t think APS staff are infallible, but I trust them a lot more than a group of self-interested parents trying to convince the county that what’s best for them is best for everyone. |
I love when parents at the relevant option schools get up to speak at board meetings and swear that they would approve of the moves if the “data made sense.” |
This is why we are leaving APS when my first kid hits HS next year, next kid soon to follow. It's become such a sh*t show. |
+1. saw the crazy attempts to lobby the county board to lobby school board, and media campaign, but missed the genocidal regime comment. Please spill what's going on. I think the problem is they have convinced themselves that this is an existential threat. So perfectly nice, typically rational people, are going insane. I think the other problem is they have been fighting it for so long. Instead of recognizing that they were fighting a losing battle, it has allowed them to feel targeted. |
Same. The other thing I keep hearing is if how the APS staff already had their minds made up at the outset and they are just shoving this proposal down everyone's throats. The staff responded to all your questions and all your maps. Honestly, it's insane they did this. But they did. They gave a lot of good reasons why the community alternatives wouldn't work. I think the root of the problem is, for some people, if APS doesn't do what they want them to do, no amount of engagement or back and forth will ever, ever help. They don't get what they want=APS is evil. This school system is too engaged with the community in my opinion. It goes on and on and on and it isn't healthy and it sets up this level of entitlement and expectation that are unreasonable. |
|
Stupid question, but why do we have to be grouped into planning units anyway?
|
because its useful for drawing boundaries and keeping track of numbers and stuff. what do you view a the alternative? |
None of the six factors are ever perfectly implemented, because that’s basically impossible. That alignment can’t always be done perfectly isn’t enough close to the staff just not caring about it. |
Come on. Entertain us cut and paste genocidal comments and any other good ones |
I’m calling you daft because you are purposefully ignoring that moving the schools results in less disruptive move of actual individual students. You are trying to frame it as if the staff’s proposal is not the least disruptive solution b/c you don’t want your school moved. I’m rezoned either way, but it is clear which aligns school locations with school populations. I won’t call you names if you don’t speak lies, deal? |
Are you moving or going private? We are looking at alternatives but FCPS would mean a longer commute for both of us — I guess for HS that is less an issue? |
