I’m a parent at one of the affected schools and I initially was involved because of course I want to stay in the loop on what’s happening. Unfortunately, I’ve seen the level of entitlement and hysteria has gone off the rails. From someone comparing the move of a few option elementary schools to a genocidal regime (seriously, you can’t make this stuff up) to the last-minute antics, I’m saddened that parents I smile at in the halls are really like this. I don’t think APS staff are infallible, but I trust them a lot more than a group of self-interested parents trying to convince the county that what’s best for them is best for everyone.
+1. saw the crazy attempts to lobby the county board to lobby school board, and media campaign, but missed the genocidal regime comment. Please spill what's going on. I think the problem is they have convinced themselves that this is an existential threat. So perfectly nice, typically rational people, are going insane. I think the other problem is they have been fighting it for so long. Instead of recognizing that they were fighting a losing battle, it has allowed them to feel targeted.
Same. The other thing I keep hearing is if how the APS staff already had their minds made up at the outset and they are just shoving this proposal down everyone's throats. The staff responded to all your questions and all your maps. Honestly, it's insane they did this. But they did. They gave a lot of good reasons why the community alternatives wouldn't work. I think the root of the problem is, for some people, if APS doesn't do what they want them to do, no amount of engagement or back and forth will ever, ever help. They don't get what they want=APS is evil. This school system is too engaged with the community in my opinion. It goes on and on and on and it isn't healthy and it sets up this level of entitlement and expectation that are unreasonable.
