| I'm talking about wedding rings. A friend of mine got engaged on valentine's day and she is making her fiance go back to the jewelry store. She says her ring is too big!! It's a 4 carat ring. Is that too big? Is there such thing as too big of a diamond? How big is your diamond on your wedding ring? |
| Before he proposed, we discussed engagement rings. I have small fingers and I told him I didn't want more than 1 C. My sister, who also has small fingers got one that is a couple of carats and it looks a little ridiculous on her hand. She has told me that it makes her a little self concious because it looks bigger than it really is simply because of her tiny little hands and she isn't a very "showy" person. |
| Mine is about 1.25 carats with two baguettes on each side. I think it's good size -- impressive enough but not pretentious. My wedding band also has three linear baguettes that complement the ring baguettes. |
No engagement ring because I don't like big diamonds and all that stuff. I have a simple gold wedding band from Tiffany with a little tiny diamond in it. Have no clue how big it is. Since you can barely see it, I don't even know if it's measurable in carats.

| To me, 4 carats would be too big. Mine is just over 1. I'd have loved something closer to 1.5 but not at the expense of a lower quality diamond. |
Ditto. I had a colleague who had a 4 carat ring and it looked like a small bird's egg on her hand. Very silly and pretentious. |

I agree with the others. Mine is around 1.7 or something total, and a (clueless) partner at my firm once said to me "Wow, that's a huge diamond! That must have set your husband back!" It was pretty embarrassing -- I mean, what do you say to that? -- but fortunately others were not around. I can't imagine what a 4 carat stone would have elicited ....
Also, I think rings tend to be bigger in this area. I think most people feel that between 1 and 2 carats is pretty "normal," but I bet in other areas, that's considered pretty big. |

It's too big if you can't pay for it without credit or without compromising other important life purchases, i.e. house down payment, etc.
It's also too big if it doesn't match the rest of your jewelry/fashion style. It should be somewhat proportional. If you don't already wear large, showy jewelry, it probably won't look good on you. To a certain extent, jewelry size should complement the size/character of the rest of you. |
| A 4ct stone is pretty damn big. My center stone is about 2.5 with two side stones. It goes well with my other every day jewelry. My sister has a 3 stone ring that probably totals between 3-4cts and it is a lot of bling! |
| Unless you're a Hollywood starlet, 4 carats is tacky. I'd be embarrassed to wear something even close to that size. |
| 4 carats would look ridiculous on most people. Mine is an antique ring c. 1923 with a 1.5 c center stone and tiny sapphires on the sides and it looks plenty big on my finger. Any bigger would look and feel cumbersome I think. |
| I would look ridiculous with a 4 carat diamond!! I have tiny hands, and after trying many diamonds, I settled on an absolutely flawless 1 carat solitaire from Tiffany. |
| Might as well wear a big sign that says, HEY! COME ROB ME! |
Or, HEY! I'M REALLY MATERIALISTIC! |
| I'm the poor showing here - .73 according to the certification that came with it. I told him nothing more than 1. It was really never my major concern. What mattered was that he spent a lot of time picking out a very high quality diamond that he felt good about and that I could wear on a daily basis without it feeling cumbersome. 4 carats? Yeah, we'd be heading back to the jewelry store too! No way would I want to cart that thing around all the time. |
