Or, HEY! I'M REALLY MATERIALISTIC!

Well, that too.

4 carats in a Princess cut is 8.75mm square (approx):
_____

|____|

(sweet "graphic", huh?)

This is just like everyone thinking the middle class starts at 150k...

Really big rings age hands quickly. They are great when you are in your 20s or 30s. But as you age, it's not really flattering. But I'm sure many will trade up by then anyway.

Huh?

There's nothing more boring than yet another diamond solitaire. They all look alike, so of course you end up comparing size in order to differentiate. I'm more partial to fanciful settings.

My ring is a 2.5 carat center stone. In DC it feels fairly big but when I go home to NY I see lots of women with way bigger. The ring has been in my family (with no changes) for over 100 years and it's very special to me. It cost my DH nothing, so I think it's pretty ridiculous that bitter people like the PPs would use it as a reason to make assumptions about my character. Fortunately I have no interest in being friends with people like that anyway.

Defensive much? Why would you assume that a discussion about 4 carat rings applies to you anyway?

No one was referring to you ring. That is just average.

carat is WEIGHT.

so is her center stone 4ct or the whole set has a total of 4ct?

Solitaire 1 carat internally flawless (can't remember color - maybe E?).

I have extremely slim fingers, no other jewelry, and this solitaire looks huge on my hand.

I wish I could trade it for a star sapphire!

Mine is 0.5 carats and its what DH could afford when we got engaged, so its perfect for me, for life, even now that we make quite a bit of money.

He scrimped and saved and put quite a bit of energy picking out a diamond with the best of the 4Cs he could get - he chose to get Tiffany, which I think set him back more than another type would have.

Honestly, whatever he picked out would be fine with me- I wasn't involved in the decision at all.

I have several friends with huge rocks - but at least two of them are having to help pay them off.

Unless the guy is really loaded, it's also a good chance that the 4 carat stone isn't very good quality. A really fine 4 carat stone would set you back some serious bucks. I personally would rather have a smaller, better quality diamond. I had a friend that had a very large stone that wasn't very good quality, and you could tell.

PP who mentioned "rob me" has a legitimate point. Seriously.

We have the same rings! The only thing is, I'm not sure it would matter much to me NOW (it might have then) if the diamonds were real or not. I want them to look real. But if there is a 'fake' diamond (not CZ) out there that could hold up looking good, I would've been good with that and put the cash toward something else.
