I think we have to teach BOTH girls and boys that they need to treat each other with respect. And most importantly they have to treat themselves with decency and respect. That includes maintaining a semblance of dignity by not getting so drunk that they need strangers to get them home, cover up their naked bodies, roll them over on their sides so that they don't choke on their own vomit and count on them to not take humiliating pictures of them to post to their buddies. Absolutely I am going to drum into my son to stay away from girls who appear that inebriated. Just stay away from them. If you know them, help them get back to their dorms if you can. |
No. Women and men - PEOPLE - need to look out for themselves. Not getting sh*t faced black out drunk, maintaining your ability to stay awake and aware and get yourself home seems like pretty basic common sense to me. Why on earth you find that to be the least bit controversial is beyond me. |

This story makes me so indignant. He clearly committed a crime and lied and his father's letter was an abomination, but there was a part of the victim's letter that rubbed me the wrong way.
She didn't know she was drinking too much? Poor girl had worked so hard that day. Someone who takes 4 SHOTS before going out and then continues to drink is usually not a first time drinker. It is a known fact by now it is NOT a good idea to be drunk a frat party. He too was highly intoxicated and he is not the first frat boy to attempt rape while drunk. He was an ass and an idiot and she was a fool. Sure she has a right to get drunk if she wants and no it doesn't excuse his behavior, but she exercised really poor judgment and this is from a person who has graduated from college. He deserves to serve time, but her letter implies she made one little oops she regrets and then a beast attacked her. You know you are in asshole territory so don't make things easy for them. Unless someone slipped something into her drink she was clearly out to party hard. This is not a freshman in college and I doubt she is naïve. The whole situation makes me sad. |
I'm quite sure that Brock wouldn't want to push the erase button if he hadn't been caught. Emily would just want it to never have happened. Brock only minded that he got caught. Very important difference. |
| Sounds like another case of "affluenza". |
I agree on many parts- I struggle with questioning the victim's ability to judge. Her letter was extremely persuasive and eloquent- but she did black out. No- a woman should not have to worry about what ifs- but she did put herself in a bad situation. The swimmer is a rapist - no doubt. As a college graduate, she should have not gotten so wasted that she blacked out. |
Do you think this victim would have fared better getting falling down drunk at a bar and passing out on a city street? Emily's mom didn't drop her daughters off at a cake and ice cream party. This wasn't a play date. And Emily was already 4 shots to the wind. I have no idea what size of a person Emily is but that is A LOT of alcohol for a girl to drink pre party. She was heading down a dangerous road and in some ways she is lucky that this happened to her at a frat party with a bunch of college kids. Things could have been WAY worse for this girl. As bad as Brock's behavior was that night and as humiliating as her hospital visit was - she is alive to tell about it. |
I am the person you are responding to and I agree with you. |
I don't agree with this. She said that she had not done much drinking in the last year, since graduating from college, and got drunk faster than she thought she would. As a woman who abstained during pregnancy, I can relate. Once my tolerance went down, I did misjudge how much I could drink without feeling the effects. |

she vomited after passing out and could not clear the vomit from her mouth without assistance. she might have aspirated and died. would've had nothing to do with brock.
i have learned who the victim was and it explains the well-crafted, creative statement. i have no doubt she will reveal herself soon and use the attention to her advantage. |
I get that but 4 SHOTS before the party? There isn't much to judge on its effect at 21 or 22 years of age. |
She was a hard core experienced drinker and she had been to her fair share of fraternity parties. People are insisting that she was an innocent lamb who was stalked and assaulted by this low life frat boy (Was Brock even a member of this frat or just an attendee?) but this girl was used to the whole drinking/hook up scene. Just because she passed out does not mean that she did not at some point give Brock the impression that she wanted to fool around with him when she went behind those dumpsters with him. Just because she passed out does not mean that she was not at some point kissing him back. And just because he was an a**hole douche who was just looking to get off and didn't even get her name - does not mean that he did not believe that she was consenting to fooling around. She was a college grad with a boyfriend so she had no real reason to give this guy her name or get to know him - it's not like they were going to see each other again. He says they were inside at one point dancing and kissing. If that is true there should be some witnesses who could verify that she was standing/dancing/kissing him. They were behind the dumpster shortly after that. Why were they back there? You tell me. 7 minutes later he was being chased and tackled by the swedes. |
Do you mean that Brock Turner is the victim?
|
hint on how to find the name? google so far gets articles on this not the name. |
True. But if you black out and don't remember giving permission to take the $10 does that then mean that your money was stolen? |
