Another UChicago student murdered. 20-yo undergraduate dies after being shot on subway.

Chicago is objectively pretty beautiful. Best food scene in the country, best urban architecture, and interesting neighborhoods. UChicago is really the only school in the city that consistently has issues with crime because it's surrounded by dangerous neighborhoods.

"Chicago Neighborhood Crime Stats: 29 Incidents Reported
University of Chicago reported 29 safety-related incidents involving students while on Chicago public property near campus in 2019. Of the 3,990 colleges and universities that reported crime and safety data, 3,845 of them reported fewer incidents than this."

From:

https://www.collegefactual.com/colleges/university-of-chicago/student-life/crime/

Please read the linked report:
“ Reported Incidents by Category

Disciplinary actions represented 26.8% of all on-campus incidents. Arrests related to possession represented 2.4% of all on-campus incidents. Violence against women represented 32.3% of all on-campus incidents. Arrests for major crimes represented 38.6% of all on-campus incidents.”.
It looks these incidences are about the UChicago students.

Because they happen on campus does not make the perpetrators U of Chicago students.

Good to see Uchicago admissions team could drop in with some local kool-aid. Chicago is brutally cold and miserable six months a year. And Uchicago and Northwestern kiddos are on a quarter system, so they're in school during the worth weather months. That "beautiful" river through downtown is literally a sewer.

And the south side Chicago ghettos around Uchicago are all miserable, dangerous and depressing; the antithesis of "best" unless you find litter, trash, blight, gunshots, and perpetual crime intoxicating.

?

I literally said UChicago is the only school in the city that has issues with crime, and that makes me the UChicago admissions team? LOL. You're really struggling there, aren't you?

Speaking of Northwestern, I've only visited once, but it is best of both worlds in my opinion, where you can easily access the city when you want it but have your own college town and campus life. Would much rather go there than UChicago.

Oh let me guess, you're going to say I'm a Northwestern admissions team member now.

Evanston has a one block "bethesda like" strip that is no different than what you have at other schools. It really isn't a college town at all.

I think you're trying to describe downtown Evanston (but not doing a great job at it... it's not just "one block"). There's more to Evanston than downtown Evanston. It's by definition a college town since it's a town with a college in it, and has the amenities you would expect a college town to have.

Sorry, strange comments in this thread -- a thread about two murdered U of C college kids in a 6 month span -- which sound like they're written by the U of C admissions team / Chicago chamber of commerce / Chicago tourism bureau.

Who was the other student and where were they when they were murdered?
I heard about a U of Maryland student was recently stabbed in the city in broad daylight. Apparently in a nice part of the city ....

Grad student from UChicago was sitting in his car in a parking garage inside his apartment building (which is heavily occupied by UChicago students) when he was shot at point blank by a crazy person going on a shooting spree.

According to the article the boy coming home from his internship was at the 51st St. stop which is about a 30 minute walk from the campus of UChicago. So yes this awful crime did happen in the city of Chicago but it doesn’t mean that it happened at the University of Chicago there’s a big difference. I’ll cities have crime and all cities have tragedies like this.

What? Are people from DMV just completely oblivious? I am not the first person and certainly not the last person to describe Chicago as beautiful. Certainly more beautiful than DC. So all the people who have ever praised NYC must also be on the NYC tourism department's dime?

And still confused how saying UChicago is the only school in the city that has issues with crime = obviously written by U of C admissions team.

The grad student was obviously a victim of a crazy person on the shooting spree. again - this could’ve happened in any city in the United States especially at this point in time!

Good job, keep hitting that talking point!

Current student recommendations:

"Don't walk alone, don't have headphones in, everything is more dangerous at night (especially transit, I uber if the sun is down), traveling in packs is smart, etc. etc."

Does this sound like a leafy quaint college campus or more like a Third World country?
