U of C has always had really intense security. At least when I was there, they mostly use off-duty CPD officers for campus security, and U of C security is also allowed to patrol/respond off-campus in the adjoining neighborhoods. I'm the poster who spent 8 years at U of C and 5 years at Hopkins. In both places, I spent a lot of time in neighborhoods and traveling throughout the cities by public transit and on foot for various research projects. For me, those experiences made me a city lifer. While I was at U of C, the most upsetting things that happened in proximity to me were a student shooting himself in the Reg bathroom (the library) and dying and another student jumping off the roof of his dorm which was right behind the apt building where I lived. |
A young female classmate of the 20-y/o young man killed by the stray bullet just wrote this powerful essay:
"Yet Another One of Our UChicago Peers Was Brutally Murdered by a Stray Bullet in Lori Lightfoot’s Crime-Infested City. A home is not a home when you’re terrified for your life." https://thechicagothinker.com/yet-another-one-of-our-uchicago-peers-was-brutally-murdered-by-a-stray-bullet-in-lori-lightfoots-crime-infested-city/ |
I was ashamed when I read about the grad student who had attended college in China, and then Cambridge...only to be gunned down while studying at another supposed elite university in the US.
I wonder how many other countries just accept Active Shooter Drills and metal detectors as a normal requirement in their elementary schools. Our gun violence is SO out of control. Really. |
And there was just a shooting at a baseball game in DC. |
Maybe we should consider keeping criminals in jail. That might work. |
That’s racist and discriminatory. |
It isn't explicitly. But the sad truth is that leniency for violent juvenile offenders, at least, seems to be the enemy of safe streets. The solution cannot be demanding that non-criminals tolerate the increased risk of violent crime. |
It is not. I am very progressive, but you are really over the top with this. |
Guessing that is your response to every position you don’t like. |
“He do the police in different voices.” |
Prisons don’t work. Educate yourself. Do some reading and come back to us. |
Educate us on how you would solve the problem. |
DP. Geez, I dunno. It’s not as if a federal ban on private handgun ownership hasn’t been suggested. The reason the US has so much gun violence is that we have so many guns. High rates of imprisonment clearly haven’t solved the problem. |
You’re wasting your time. Too many dummies in this country to ever have hope for gun reform. Other countries have solved (or vastly improved) their gun problems but we’re so arrogant it would never occur to us that there are successful models to emulate. Same for prison reform. We’re the greatest country on earth, right? How could anything we do not be the best? |
^^a quarter of Americans are such morons that they think Trump won. Think about how stupid you have to be to believe that. |
