I am sorry to hear that! Hopefully teaching (a primarily women's profession) will start gain real respect and real salaries. Parents tend to demand more out of teacher's whilst simultaneously not giving anything in return. |
Written sarcasm is often hard to detect. |

Today’s email:
MCPS has extended the application deadline for in-person and virtual summer school programs to June 16, 2021. All 10-month bargaining unit members who apply to work for summer school by the June 16 deadline and are subsequently approved/selected will earn a $200 per week bonus. Only those who apply before the deadline are eligible to receive the additional $200 per week, so be sure to check the posting and apply as soon as possible! |

It’s a bit confusing to me. Many teachers are waiting to hear back after applying. Most of the job postings are still there. I have the feeling county is not getting enough ESOL and SpEd teachers to sign up, so because of service and equity issues may not be able to offer many of the courses or grade level programs. I have no proof of this, though, but it makes sense.
I think the county is also trying to get more students signed up before opening up more sections and assigning staff. I think there will be a lot of last minute sign-ups with the constant pushing back of deadlines. |
| At the elementary school where I work, we have over 100 kids on the waitlist. It is sad because MCPS had said summer school for all, but there’s just not enough teachers. |
Or they don’t want the applicants they are getting. |
Well, I guess they shouldn't have said that. It's not a shortage if there are enough qualified people to fill the position. |
Having enough qualified people WILLING to do the work means no shortage. |
Holy crap. A rational, intelligent response on DCUM. Will wonders never cease? |
On DCUM, on Facebook, on other social media, at the playground, in the grocery store, at the adjoining outdoor table at the restaurant. Entitled parent temper tantrums are absurdly loud and ubiquitous. Yes, teachers will "turn down work" to do extra work outside their contracted 10 months because they give not a single, solitary crap that angry, hysterical parents demand summer school/free summer childcare for their kids. You made your bed. Enjoy your kids. |
| Is the shortage why I haven’t gotten any details about virtual algebra for the summer? Registered and crickets. |
|
The teachers who think summer school is child care- are you parents? I find it hard to believe that any teacher/parent would still cling to the tired line that parents want kids in buildings for childcare.
Have you returned, in person- and seen the truly transformative impact it’s had on your students? Have you sent your own kids back and seen the impact being back has had on your student/family. As for those who are threatening to quit because of internet snark- grow up. People have ALWAYS hated teachers. So here your opportunity to see this just as a job. Don’t hold out for teacher appreciation week gifts- but also maybe stop reading internet hate. Teaching is a job. That’s it. It’s fair and ok to take issue with how unions handled this past year. Teachers unions are not above reproach. |
Trolly polly wanna cracker? There is a shortage. period.
|
Truly transformative? Lol give me a break. The kids are acting exactly like they’ve always acted. Nothing more, nothing less. |
