A list of Karens? What does that even mean? A list of you and your friends? What is your racial background that makes you an authority on how a white person, or an Asian person for that matter, perceives an event? |
I am an Asian American woman with a PhD in history. FYI. |
DP. Well then surely you appreciate waiting for facts to come in. |
I haven't even given my opinion here. I shared my Asian family members' opinion. I'm sorry you don't think it's valid or worthy of sharing since it differs from yours, but that's your issue, and one that seems worthy of some self reflection. FYI. |
I also understand that "facts" always exist in context. |
Did you personally analyze all the facts before you concluded Hitler was anti-Semite? |
DP. That still doesn't make you any kind of authority on what people you've never met perceive, or would perceive it if they studied more history. You seem REALLY invested in making assumptions about other people and demanding that they see everything your way. Do we get to question your motives or do only PhDs in history get to do that? |
DP. Yes, and it wasn't a tough call considering he said he was all the time. But now that I understand we should never believe the word of a mass murderer, I think he was probably just a sex addict. |
Do you mistrust expertise? Do you think it's better to put facts in historical context or do you prefer to go on not having examined the complex and painful histories of the peoples around you? |
Hitler was just a sex addict getting his kicks at the expense of 6M? Did you really analyze, really analyze, all the known docs about Hitler before your conclusion? I think the PhD PP’s asking why you are so invested might be from her skepticism that you truly are waiting for all the facts to come in. You seem too invested in your belief. |
There's no doubt that mental illness is a component in this, but the fact that most of the victims were Asian does point to the possibility of a racial issue too, at least enough that we can't dismiss it. There's no reason it can't be both and I don't think it's necessarily just one thing that would motivate someone to do something like that. It seems some sort of mental illness and lonely "outsider" feeling that is always at play in these situations and the resulting violence is tragic any way you slice it. |
I mistrust anyone who claims to be an expert in an anonymous forum where it is impossible to verify their credentials. I further mistrust anyone who makes assumptions about personal motivations without sufficient evidence. |
I think PhD's PP cynical line of questioning is just a way to ignore whatever other people have to say. My sarcasm is a way to poke at other people's cynicism, but unfortunately it failed in this case. |
I'm not really sure where you are going with this. I think it started with a PP (you?) falsely attributing an absurd opinion to me. Now you are you quoting philosophers of the absurd and the evil about why you don't need facts or proof, you can just make assumptions based on whatever you see and take it from there. If that's what you think Arendt and Camus are all about, it's no wonder you think I'm absurd. |
It’s actually a few things: yes, mental illness needs to be addressed in this country (the GOP is certainly hostile to anything to do with helping people, so once again, responsible governance falls on the Democrats). It’s pretty apparent that this guy commit a hate crime; reducing Asians to “the people fueling my sex addiction” is racism. It’s a fetish. And finally: we need common sense gun control. The whole “mental illness” thing is a red herring, as is the debate over whether or not this was racially motivated (it was), meant to distract from gun control. |
