Evidently tobacco money can only take you so far.

Don't forget those "one and done" scholar athletes.

Duke has probably been the most overrated school for the past 20 years. It's literally made a name off of being hard to get into. What undergraduate programs at Duke are world-class?

It has a world-class medical school and hospital, I'll grant that. But I'm asking about undergraduate programs.

A Top 10 university should probably have a few undergrad programs that are considered world-class. Maybe Duke is finally dropping to where it belongs. I predict the decline will continue.

How are their grad programs (like Marine Biology/sciences)?

How does that differ from other schools? All top schools have made a name off of being difficult admits. Top universities in the U.S. are overpriced and bloated, but why are you singling out Duke?

Singling out Duke because I can't identify an undergraduate program at Duke that is world-class. It's not hard to do for Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, MIT, Yale, Stanford, UChicago, Penn, CalTech or Nothwestern. In terms of academic programs, Duke doesn't fit with these 10 schools, yet has been ranked with them for years--until now.

Says the person commenting on Page 11 of a rankings thread. But you're too cool and too busy, I know.

When you do a graduate degree like a PhD, MD, or professional degree like law or an MBA, your degree is indeed tied to the program and its quality and reputation. At an undergraduate level, it is much more tied to the overall undergraduate program and reputation. Where does Duke lag these schools in this regard? If you look at quality of teaching, USNWR has Duke #9, which is behind only Princeton on the list you have. If you look at NPV, Duke is a top performer and at a similar level to these schools. Duke has top level graduation and retention rates.

You're looking at the wrong ranking. All college counselors know that public and private universities cannot be compared - they have different missions to their states, hence, agricultural offerings at VA Tech, etc. andin-state v. OOS issues. The correct USN&WR rating for UVA is the "Top Public Schools" where UVA comes in no. 4 after UCLA, Berkeley and Michigan. For 27 years UVA was no. 2 and sometimes no. 1 public, always above Michigan. When USN&WR started incorporating Pell Grant recipients as a criterion to be looked at, UVA dropped to No. 4 because Michigan has more Pell Grant recipients. But if you know anything about Pell Grants, you know that UVA and the other schools have no ability to affect their Pell Grant numbers since that is a function of the state's populace. https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/top-public. If a school is in a wealthier state per capita, their Pell Grant recipient numbers will necessarily be lower.

UVA was never ranked as number 2 for 27 years. Please. UVA is more overrated than Duke.

Sometimes it is difficult to say what USNWR is actually ranking.

by one place Mich - tied for 24

As it was last year.

Both probably have a better undergraduate experience overall than UCLA and Berkeley, which are ranked higher.
there is no 25
UVA -26

Since USN&WR decided two years ago that pell grant recipients numbers should be included, UVA was dropped below Michigan but few understand that UVA has no control over the no. of pell grant students it accepts. Read Pell Grant in wiki if you don't understand. UVA was no. 1, 2 (tied with Berkeley) or three, with UCLA and Berkeley in the lead for 27 years until the pell grant issue was introduced. Now it's no. 4 for the last two years for "Top public universities" by U.S. New&World Report. The only reason that Michigan is now above it is due to the inclusion of the "new" pell grant category, a category no school can control. Michigan has more poor residents per capita than UVA, etc.

Michigan is above UVA because it is a better school. UVA will be out of top 30 in few years.

Look into the “Cardinal Quarter” program. Top schools have resources that “lower” ones do not.

They were looking at the right ranking. Florida is 30 and UVA 26th. If you want to look at the public schools only, then yes, UVA is only 2 spots ahead of Florida. Schools can do things that affect Pell grant applications. They can recruit more in less affluent school districts. They can accept more people from less affluent areas (which might lower overall admitted stats). UVA already gives significant admission advantages to certain minorities (blacks and Hispanics). They can avoid doing ED (which has wealthier applicants).
